"I contacted Greg after I turned on the heater for the first time and noticed a burning smell coming from the ducts. While they were booked out three days in the future, Greg found a way to work us into the schedule the same day. Within hours, they had the problem diagnosed and had located the parts needed to fix it--all at a fair and reasonable cost. Additionally, they offered advice on how best to maintain our air conditioning unit. I would highly recommend them and will be calling them again with future work."

"Aaron did a great job cleaning the duct work and cold air returns. The system works more efficiently and the air is easier to breath. He was efficient at the job, and gave us a great price."

Small jobs welcome

"Bill was very professional and did an awesome job cleaning the ducts, dryer vent, etc. I immediately noticed the air in the house is fresh. My daughter even noticed it when she came in. Great job. I recommended him to my daughter and will to whomever needs this done."

"Prompt. Patient explaining options. Honest in his recommendations. Excellent craftsmanship. As a local, licensed and professional independent small business they demonstrated personal pride in the finished product. I called Zach because our AC was not working. He assessed the problem and provided options. In consideration for the age of the entire HVAC system, I decided to replace both the AC unit and the furnace. It is important to note that everything was not rainbows and lollipops. There was an issue getting the equipment delivered ahead of the install, but Zach addressed the issue promptly and the job was completed. We were very happy with the overall transaction and value Martin Mechanical delivered."

"As female investor seeking to hiring contractors that are transparent and have high integrity. I hit the jackpot with MIDPOINT COOL TEMP. Robert is passionate and genuine in his assessment and recommends "options to repair" vs immediately replacing a unit. Provided him a key to the vacant home, he got the heating system functioning, cleaned his area, and updated us promptly. FIVE STAR SERVICE all around!!"

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

You can buy a house with a 15-year-old HVAC system if you inspect the system for performance and budget for a replacement within the next three years. You can also negotiate the price with the sellers. Ask to look at the unit’s maintenance records and energy bills for the last two years to determine the shape of the HVAC system and its operating costs. Spend time in each room of the house to gauge if the HVAC keeps the home at a consistent temperature throughout.

Window AC units use a fair amount of electricity, but significantly less than central AC systems. Because they are more energy-efficient for cooling individual rooms or small spaces, their usage is comparatively low. On average, a window AC unit consumes between 500 and 1,400 watts, while a central AC system uses over 3,500 watts—meaning a window unit uses about one-third of the energy. This typically translates to a monthly running cost of $15 to $40, although this can vary depending on external factors.

A window AC unit is not completely silent. You’ll hear the sound of air blowing, and if you put your ear right up next to the unit, you may hear a slight hiss or gurgle as the refrigerant flows through the system. That said, if your system is making a running water sound, a loud banging sound, a grinding sound, or physically vibrating, you may be facing an issue or malfunction with your AC unit.

There are several common types of HVAC systems that you may have, including split systems, hybrid HVAC, duct-free systems, packaged heating and air, geothermal heating, or even portable units for heating or cooling. If you aren’t sure which type is in your home or are looking to install something different, you should consult an HVAC pro to determine which option is right for your heating and cooling needs.

Yes, high-efficiency models reduce environmental impact with lower energy use.
