"Richard and his team did a great job resolving my issue.  Richard was prompt in responding to my initial request for information.  He called me within a few hours of receiving the note that I sent to him via Angie's list.  We spoke first thing the next morning and quickly scheduled a visit.  Richard not only shared his expertise to explaining what he thought the problem was and how to resolve it.  He also pointed out that I may have coverage via my homeowner's insurance, something I hadn't considered.  He called his insurance expert on the spot and gave me advice on how to handle a claim.  Richard came out to meet with me and the underwriter and helped me get through that process.  He started work very quickly thereafter and had the entire project done within a week; plumbing, drywall, painting and all.  I'd use him again for any future work I need done."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.

When you are learning how to tape and mud drywall, waiting for things to dry requires a lot of patience. So how long does drywall mud take to dry? On average, it takes about 24 hours. However, it depends on things like the thickness of the mud, as well as the room’s temperature, humidity, and ventilation. Using thin layers of mud in a warm, low-humidity room with good airflow reduces average drying time. You also could speed up drying time by making use of hot drywall mud, which consists of a powder that you mix with water, instead of using pre-mixed mud.

Drywall is safe to cut as long as you follow proper procedures, such as wearing personal protective equipment and using the right tools to score and cut the drywall. When cutting new drywall, it can release dust with silica and other compounds that could pose health risks. Leave cutting drywall to the pros, or wear a high-quality respiratory mask, goggles, and other PPE when handling drywall.

While every home has its own unique needs, ceiling drywall installation typically follows a staggered or stepped pattern to enhance structural integrity and reduce the visibility of seams. Starting from one corner, sheets are placed perpendicular to the ceiling joists, with the ends of adjacent sheets meeting along the center of the joist. The next row begins with a half sheet, ensuring joints don't align vertically. This alternating pattern, combined with proper taping and mudding, creates a seamless appearance and strengthens the ceiling structure, minimizing the risk of cracks over time.

Applying spackle is a simple DIY project that most people can complete in just a few hours. Even homeowners who have little DIY experience can complete this project in an afternoon. However, if you're uncomfortable with the project or don't have the time, you can always hire a pro to help.
