"Harvey was really a great guy to work with.  He gave me a ton of options (many cheaper than what we eventually went with) and represented each option honestly and fairly (without  pushing the most expensive option).  He knows his stuff, delivered on time and on budget and clean.  Super outcome.

"Repairs were excellent and thorough "even well documented". The tech found units low on coolant. He identified and repaired multiple refrigerant leak points. I have dealt with many HVAC contractors over the years and Freedom Air Mechanical is one of the best. I highly recommend."

"Palmer Gas & Oil just did an entire replacement of the 20-year-old central HVAC + humidifier + thermostats two-zone system in my home with a new state-of-the-art total system and I could not be more pleased. From start to finish each employee was personable, extremely knowledgeable, very courteous, and the consummate professional. Small jobs welcome

"Josh installed a new water heater, provided us with instructions on proper use and maintenance and has serviced it since. He is honest, thorough, and trustworthy. He also maintains my dad’s HVAC needs too. He has come out for emergency calls too. Suggest things to prevent future additional repair expenses. His prices are reasonable, especially for the personal, friendly customer service and service provided. I would highly recommend Northwoods HVAC."

"AC condenser developed a coolant leak in July. Contacted Mike Roman through Home Advisor. Mike responded super fast and was able to swing by my house and get the system up and running strong in just a few hours. Given the heat we were experiencing, the time Mike spent laboring hard in my very hot attic and the end result being a great running system, I cannot say enough great things about the work Mike does. Will definitely keep him in mind for future work."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

You will only need to refill your AC with refrigerant if it has a leak. Otherwise, a modern, well-maintained AC will most likely never need a recharge. You may notice a leak in an older system if your bills are higher, you hear a hissing sound, or if the air is blowing out hot.

Not if you have a standard unit. Because portable AC units actually work to dehumidify the room, you’ll likely need to drain the unit from time to time—but you won’t have to put water into it. There is, however, another type of air conditioner called a swamp cooler that requires water to operate. If you have a swamp cooler, you may need to fill a reservoir with water and potentially ice. But a swamp cooler is different from a standard portable AC unit.

Ideally, an AC system should never need more Freon (a popular refrigerant) because it circulates in a closed loop. However, refrigerant leaks are not uncommon and may occur gradually over 5 to 15 years. If your system has a leak, it will need to be topped up in a process known as an AC recharge. Signs of a refrigerant leak include weakened AC performance, increased humidity in your home, higher utility bills, and a hissing sound from the unit. The cost of an AC recharge will depend on the size and type of your AC unit, as well as the type of refrigerant it uses.

Replacing both an AC and a furnace takes a full day on average, ranging from eight to 12 hours. The process involves removing the old units, installing the new ones, and ensuring all connections are properly made. If both systems are being replaced simultaneously, it can take longer than installing a furnace alone, so plan accordingly.

The general rule of thumb for figuring out how much AC tonnage you need in your home is that for every 500 to 600 square feet of space you need to cool, you’ll need one ton of AC cooling power. So, a 1,000-square-foot home will need 2 tons of AC power.
