"Adam is such a great electrician. His workmanship is flawless, and his ability to troubleshoot a situation is incredible. His range of abilities allows you to hire him for any job. He installed 15-20 recessed lights in my house, as well dozens of new switches and outlets, an electric wall heater, and even two brand new complete electrical panels (two family home). His pre-work consultation was spot on; there were no surprises. If you want a company that truly offers Integrity and Quality in their work, call IQ Electric."

"Mike was super responsive and very helpful when picking out a new thermostat for our heated floor. The two electricians that came to the house to install the thermostat and a new chandelier were prompt, courteous, and great to work with. We will definitely be recommending Payne Electric to others and look forward to working with them again."

Small jobs welcome

"After one of the snowstorms we had this last winter, we found ourselves without electricity. A tree had fallen across our power line, ripping the electric meter off the house and hurling it across the lawn. Perhaps it is needless to say that we felt like the helpless prey of the Universe. On the advice of a friend, we called C. B. Electric. This company proved to be fast and reliable. Their charges were reasonable. They were polite, really nice and reassuring people. They told us when they would be here, and they came when they said they would, which was only a day or two later. They immediately started a search for a replacement meter. When they got that, their work was fast and was performed with what I like to call "snappy exactitude." We absolutely could not have been better pleased. Electricians just don't get better than this."

"I called Kevin with an electrical problem that seemed - on the surface - to require his services. But, rather than accept the job and earn some revenue, he texted me through the simple fix and solved my problem quickly. I asked him to send me an invoice for his time but he refused. I would like to commend Kevin for his integrity and honesty. Rest assured when the time comes, and it will, when his services ARE actually required... I will not hesitate to give Beacon Electric a call and reward this genuine act of kindness."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

A C-wire connects your thermostat to your household heating and cooling system to provide continuous 24V power. The furnace's transformer converts household electrical current into this low-voltage power to operate the HVAC system's circuitry. In most configurations, the C-wire connects to the terminals labeled "C" on both the furnace's low-voltage terminal block and the thermostat. In some cases, if a dedicated C terminal is unavailable, the C-wire can be connected to the "G" (fan) terminal at the furnace.

While it’s not possible to put a main breaker in a main lug panel, it’s possible to convert a main lug to a main breaker. Converting to a main breaker panel offers increased safety, simplified control, compliance with building codes, and adaptation to changing electrical needs, especially when adding new circuits or upgrading the system.

Yes, states and local governments can have additional building codes that address kitchen outlets. In most cases, these kitchen outlet codes simply refer to the NEC. However, states or local municipalities can have separate requirements for electrician licensing, such as requiring a permit to make big changes, and other details.

Yes, a light switch still has power even when switched off. Switches only interrupt or continue the flow of electricity into a fixture or outlet; they do not shut off the power flowing into the wire. The only way to shut off power in a light switch is to turn off the power at the circuit breaker.

If you need to run a wire from the meter to the breaker box, start by turning off the power using the main switch to avoid injury risks from live wires. Then, locate the ground wire from your meter and connect it to the ground bar of the breaker box. Connect the neutral wire using the same method to improve your circuit efficiency.

Next, locate the hot wires running from the main switch to the meter. To connect them to the correct terminals from meter to breaker, unscrew the nuts of the breaker hotwire terminals, insert the positive hotwire, and ensure it’s firmly attached. Finally, secure the wires with electrical tape and wire tie cables before re-securing your breaker box. Keep in mind that this process can be dangerous, so don’t hesitate to hire a local electrician.
