"We love our cabinets! They look fantastic while remaining affordable. The friendly staff at AWD helped us from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable and gave us advice and tips when needed. They were receptive and patient with our ever-changing needs. Once we finalized our purchase, we received our cabinets within two weeks! The cabinets are very sturdy and the color is beautiful. The hinges and hardware are high quality. We are extremely pleased with AWD and would recommend them to any friends or family looking for good cabinets at a fair price."

"I was about to have an ulcer in planning my long distance move (Washington DC to Milwaukee)...I must have called 5 different moving companies and researched way more than that, but TMM was the only company I spoke to that combined an affordable quote (well, as "affordable" as a move of this distance can be!) with a professionalism that put me at ease. I decided to go for it, and could not be happier with my decision. The care the movers took in wrapping my furniture in blankets and plastic wrap before removing it from my apartment bordered on obsessive (which I was more than ok with!). The movers were efficient, professional, and pleasant people. My things arrived in Milwaukee exactly on time and there were no surprises with the price. Would definitely recommend this company to anyone and would use them again without question if I ever move back to the DC area."

"The card says "CJ Craftsman Handyman Services", but these guys are more than just Handyman Services, they can cover large remodeling projects with incredible quality. The CJ team was brought in to identify a leak in a ceiling. They quickly discovered that it was the upstairs bathroom as the culprit. The team developed a complete list of tasks and pricing to repair the issue. The work they delivered is of the utmost quality. Key items to their quality effort include: making things right that the previous homeowner had "Cut corners" on, great clean up services and superb communication via email and text messaging. If you have been putting off an improvement to your home, take the time to meet with the CJ team and improve your home for your comfort. They have a great design team to look at kitchen and bathroom designs. They are responsive via email and text. Most importantly they focus on quality for your home. While a lot people like to do their own home improvement, take the time to outsource to the CJ Team for the quality work you deserve. The job will focus on quality and you will be living comfortably in your home."

Closets questions, answered by experts

Yes, adding a built-in or custom closet generally increases your home's value and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed closet adds utility, organization, and a touch of luxury, which are appealing selling points. Most homeowners see a return on investment (ROI) of 50% to 60%; for example, a custom closet can add about $1,000 to your home's value on average. The specific ROI depends on the type, with custom walk-in closets typically providing more value than reach-in closets. However, to maximize value, ensure the closet doesn't significantly detract from the room's usable square footage. Converting an entire room into a closet can actually lower your home's value. Similarly, using overly lavish materials may not recoup their cost. A good strategy is to add a closet that takes square footage from a non-living area, such as a garage, to create a mudroom closet.

Although you can complete a closet frame in just an afternoon, finishing the entire closet will take a few days to a week. However, that’s still not as much as the average time it takes to remodel a closet, which can take anywhere from several weeks to more than a month. That’s because you also have to consider the time it will take to demolish the existing space, plan a new design, order materials, and actually install it.

Costs depend on material, customization level, and additional features like lighting or sliding doors.

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.

The differences between a built-in closet and a walk-in aren’t that different from a built-in wardrobe and a walk-in closet. It’s fairly simple—a walk-in closet is a closet you can physically enter, stand in, and walk around in. A built-in (whether wardrobe or closet) is more akin to covered shelves installed into a recess in the wall. Another big difference is walk-in closets almost always have traditional full-size doors, while built-ins either have no doors or use sliding doors.
