"I requested a next day appointment for an estimate for an urgent junk removal thru Home Advisor for an estate home sale. I received a call in a few hours from Steven, of Beltway Hauling, telling me he could come the same day if needed. He arrived with his co-worker, did a quick assessment of the house and began hauling out items. They were fast, efficient, courteous, and professional. They worked until it was dark and pouring rain. They promised to return the next day to complete the project, as the truck was full. They returned the following afternoon, as promised, and removed everything... leaving the home ready to be cleaned and put on the market. They even assisted my father and brother with moving a non-working car from the driveway and helped return it at completion ofthe project. We could have not completed the house prep without them. Beltway Hauling offered fast, professional, and thorough service at a very good value. I would definitely recommend them (and have) and I would use them again."

Small jobs welcome

"Five Brothers Junk Removal exceeded expectations. I posted on Angie’s List and had a callback within 90 seconds — they came out same day for an estimate, and their bid matched my budget exactly. We scheduled the work for day three, and their two-man crew arrived and worked diligently for one solid hour, completing the entire project: old play structures, two oversized 100+ lb sandboxes, tarps, Power Wheels, bikes, yard waste, and debris — all cleared, leaving the yard spotless. The estimate matched the final invoice exactly, and they delivered everything promised, on schedule. Efficient, hardworking, and completely reliable. THE BEST! I’ll be recommending them on every neighborhood app I use. As a Chevy Chase/Bethesda homeowner, I refer Five Brothers with complete confidence. Sara"

"The team I worked with was very respectful and courteous. They worked hard and answered all my concerns even if they had to call their supervisor, Manuel, who was just great. My patio is beautiful and they were able to complete it within the time specified in the contract although they could not work one day because of the rain. I would definitely recommend this company. Also, the price was reasonable and within our budget."

Leaf Removal questions, answered by experts

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hazardous waste is generally classified into four main categories:

1. Characteristic Wastes: These exhibit at least one of four hazardous traits: ignitability (flammable, like gasoline), corrosivity (can rust or decompose materials, like car batteries), reactivity (unstable and can explode, like aerosol cans), or toxicity (harmful when ingested, like lead-based paint).

2. Listed Wastes: These are specific wastes from manufacturing and industrial processes that the EPA has officially designated as hazardous. They include byproducts from processes that use solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals.

3. Universal Wastes: These are commonly generated hazardous items that are subject to streamlined regulations. Examples include batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment (e.g., bulbs), and some lamps.

4. Mixed Wastes: This category includes waste that contains both hazardous and radioactive components, making it subject to regulation by both the EPA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Lead toxicity comes from inhaling lead or consuming it. Before the 1980s, when the government banned lead from consumer use, it could be found in paint, plumbing, pipes, ceramics, and even gasoline. Lead paint is toxic for the same reason lead itself is toxic, which is why lead poisoning from paint presents the same as lead poisoning from water or food sources, with a slight increase in respiratory symptoms vs. digestive symptoms. Lead paint is most dangerous when it’s old and peeling, cracking, or otherwise disturbed. This increases the concentration in the air and, therefore, in breathable air.

Professionals use appropriate equipment to prevent property damage and ensure efficiency.

You can paint over lead paint, or “encapsulate” it with a special paint that includes an ingredient called an encapsulant. The EPA approves encapsulation as a lead paint removal method as long as the paint remains undisturbed. Standard types of paint without an “encapsulant” from the big box stores or hardware stores do not meet EPA standards for remediation of lead-based paint.

Unfortunately, lead dust does not look different from any other type of dust. You cannot detect it with the naked eye. To determine if you have lead dust in your home, you will need to hire a local company to take a sample from the paint and test it for you in a lab.
