"I received a call from Joe less than 12 hours after submitting info on HomeAdvisor.com. I didn't hire him immediately only because the gas company we use was coming today to check for a possible gas leak, but I did put Joe on notice saying that I would get back to him if I needed him to service the fireplace. After speaking with the fellow from the gas company, I followed his advice (which was to get a fireplace professional in to take a look). Within two hours of the gas technician leaving, Joe was at my door, right on time and ready to work. After looking at the fireplace he concluded that there was no leak that everything was in pretty good shape and that no further work was required. Our fireplace got a clean bill of health and I would happily recommend Joe to anyone who has any questions or problems with a gas fireplace. Right now Joe is running a summer special and instead of the usual $179 charge, it is currently $139, with a second fireplace check for $79. I would not hesitate to call Joe again! Do yourself a favor and give him a try."

Fireplace Cleaners questions, answered by experts

You may be wondering: can you paint cement? Fortunately, the answer is yes.

To change the color of your cinder blocks, you have two options. You can either paint them or stain them. Either way, you'll be able to choose from a wide range of color options. Some popular colors for cinder block painting include off-white shades and gray tones, which add a modern spin to the traditional gray blocks.

The most inexpensive option is to paint the brick facing of your existing fireplace. You can create an interesting design with the right color of paint, as long as the brick is in good shape. Sometimes, simply cleaning the brick fireplace makes a big difference in the way it looks. Otherwise, covering an existing stone, brick, or masonry fireplace facing with stucco or concrete is an inexpensive option versus tearing out the existing material and refacing the fireplace.

Costs depend on material type, labor, chimney requirements, and structural reinforcements.

When comparing which is better between German schmear, whitewash, and limewash, your answer will depend on the look you're going for. German schmear is the best option for those who want a heavily distressed look for their brick without full coverage. Whitewash is best if you like the current brick color and want it to show through. Limewash paint is best for full coverage.

When it comes to painting your bricks, you’ve got a few options. Traditionally, lime wash (a mix of aged, burned, and crushed lime and water) was used to whitewash brick or stone. You can also find premixed brick whitewash paint that cuts out a few steps and lets you get started faster. However, for the best results, we recommend using a DIY whitewash (white acrylic paint mixed with water).
