"Edge Energy has installed solar power system on three houses that I own. In each case, they did an outstanding job. Their crew is experienced and work very hard. They were very careful with my property and involved me in decision making when options were available. If you want the best, go with Edge Energy and SunPower."

"The Complete Home Solutions' crew that handled my attic's insulation project was informative, professional and timely. They explained their processes start to finish, answering all questions along the way. Even in the face of obstacles due to the nature of my unique attic, they overcame and completed the project on-time and to complete satisfaction, absolutely astounding job! A giant thank you to the crew; Brad, TJ, JB, Jeremy, Anthony, and Jason!"

"Wonderful, it was a very quick and easy process. Brian talked us through it and in no time we had a 3KW system mounted on a frame in the garden and the invertor installed in the basement. Brian talked us through working with our power company to get the system checked and approved and we now get credits from the power company for power we provide to the grid. In addition we are set up to get Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) payments for providing clean energy. We also got a free Energy Audit which helped locate some problems areas we were able to fix. The system has basically cut our energy costs in half. I have hesitation in recommending them to anyone interested in solar energy."

"Person who visited was very polite and noted that what I purchased was likely not something that would meet my expectations.  I wanted an energy audit, how my systems could be improved in home, lighting, heating, insulation and air conditioners.  What I got was a list of things they could work on and the price to do that work.  The work list in no way was considered an energy audit, rather it was a punch list of things I could do based on their visual inspection.  I did not have a comparison of work and benefit/savings calculation.  There was no checklist of inefficiencies and how that translated into energy losses. For example, multiple hi hat lights in house, they spoke about boxing and insulating a few, less than 10, when I have almost 90 in house.  Overall I was disappointed, the tech who came said the offering needed to be better presented prior to start of work."

"Before contacting any potential contractors, we researched available heating and air conditioning system brands and decided on Goodman. We then used Angie's List to identify potential contractors who supply and service Goodman products. We chose Ben's Air Conditioning and Heating for the estimate based on the company's location and information about the company from both Angie's List and the Better Business Bureau. We contacted Ben's via phone and made an appointment for them to visit and make an estimate. On the appointed day, the representative from Ben's arrived on schedule. He looked at the existing system, which was 17 years old, and listened to our description of the replacement system we believed would best meet our needs. He was knowledgable and was able to answer all of our questions about problems that might arise from installing a more energy efficient system that could qualify us for an income tax credit. For questions he could not answer, he was able to obtain answers fairly quickly by phone. He provided the estimate at the end of his visit, and we requested a date for installation that was about 6 weeks later. [They could have done it much sooner, but we needed the extended time.] I had planned to call several days before the appointed installation date, but Ben's called me first to verify the plan. On the appointed day, the Ben's crew arrived on time. While at the house, they were polite and considerate. The job took several hours longer than expected, but they stayed on the job until everything was done and checked for operability. Before leaving, they cleaned up after themselves fairly well. We had only two concerns. First, during condenser installation, the technician released a considerable amount of refrigerant fluid into the environment, both onto the soil and into the air, as he was trying to adjust the system pressure to meet specifications. While this did not affect the quality of the job in terms of its operability, we would have preferred that more attention be given to pollutant control. Second, after the Ben's team had departed, we noticed that the AC system was not cooling properly. Fortunately, we had obtained a cell phone number for one of technician's during their visit and were able to get in touch with him less than an hour after they left. The team was eating nearby, and they returned immediately to discover that, for this high efficiency AC system, a controller for the condenser was needed that had been in advertently omitted. Further investigation found the missing part on their truck, because it had been loaded for delivery with our system, although none of the team recognized that it needed to be installed. In the end, they installed the controller, and the system now seems to be working fine. They were very apologetic about the oversight. We were just glad to have caught the error before they were out of the area and unavailable to make the correction immediately. Cost estimate = Fee paid."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

Upgrade to double-glazed glass or apply energy-efficient coatings to reduce heat loss and utility costs.

There are several strategic ways to lower your home insurance premium. The primary one is to shop around and get quotes every few years to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Also, sometimes bundling your auto and homeowner’s insurance will get you a discount on both. Finally, try to keep your credit score up; many homeowner insurance companies use credit scores to generate quotes.

Yes, installing an attic fan can help lower your electric bill—particularly if you live in a hot and humid region. By replacing hot and stuffy air with cooler air, these fans help regulate the temperature in your attic and the rest of your home, taking some of the pressure off of your air conditioner.

Leaving vents open but closing doors in unused rooms will probably not save money on your energy bill. Closed doors prevent the natural flow of air throughout the home, which could reduce the efficiency of the overall HVAC system. They could also restrict airflow into and through the return vents, making the HVAC system less efficient.

There is no blanket figure for a residential home’s electrical load, since load varies by the size of the home, how many appliances are used, and the efficiency of their electrical systems. Typically, however, it’s safe to assume 40 to 60 amps is the average electrical load of a residential home.
