For the removal of drywall and plaster that covered brick we wanted to expose, it went much the same way. I came over in the middle of this part of the job, and the team were pounding on the wall to remove all the plaster?it was messy work as you can imagine. By the end of the day, it was again totally cleaned up. David and his team took extra care to make the wall look great, including wire brushing it with bleach. It's the highlight of our downstairs now! Throughout the job, he showed a lot of attention to detail, making sound decisions for things I hadn't considered, like where a light-switch should go or how to fill in the missing crown molding. They did a great job and would definitely use them again for a big project! In the fall of 2014 we set out to hire a general contractor to perform a complete gut and remodel of our cooperative apartment kitchen. The space was original to this 1966 structure and was in dire need of some TLC. We had been planning for well over a year before we even started looking for a contractor, so we had a very good idea on the design and didn't need any help in that arena.
We opted to go with Green Studio Builders (GSB) for a couple of reasons. The first is that we saw their work first hand in another apartment within our building and we were very impressed with the craftsmanship especially considering the complexities of that project. Our project was similarly complex and it was reassuring to know that they had experience to tackle more than the run of the mill project. It's also nice to work with a contractor that already knows the building, the management staff, the rules and regulations, etc. The second reason was the result of our interaction with the owner of the company during his onsite visit to our apartment during the assessment phase. One could describe Chris as passionate. During the walkthrough he was a terrific listener and clearly was able to grasp the intensity of the project.
The project consisted of gutting a 20' x 12' kitchen right down to the studs and concrete sub floor, removing walls between the kitchen and living room, walls between the kitchen and dining room as well as a wall between the living room and dining room. We were going for an open concept and amidst that there was re-routing of trunk phone lines for apartments above and below us as well as a thermostat relocation.
Work began in February and completed 4 months later in June. We were assigned an operations manager and supervisor to the project. Between them they were to coordinate all of the onsite activities. Despite the assigned leadership, I assure you that I was keeping a strict eye on the project at all times. We were not about to part with this kind of money with no personal oversite regardless of GSB?s reputation. While the project was a huge success, I assure you that there were several conversations throughout the project to have minor elements corrected or to re-educate the crew members on the expectations of the project elements. This type of open communication was vital and GSB?s entire crew was excellent at following through on my every concern without ever making us feel like we were overbearing.
The demolition was completed in two phases; the first was an early prep to remove the old cabinetry and appliances to prepare the space for the asbestos abatement company (with whom we were expected to contract independently with). Once the asbestos abatement was complete, GSB returned immediately to resume with phase two of the demolition where they removed the walls. During this process our apartment was thoroughly draped to try and contain the dust and protection was laid on our hard wood floors to protect them from damage. The debris was removed from the apartment in a timely manner. With demolition complete, the new walls were framed and GSB coordinated for the electrical and plumbing sub-contractors to complete the necessary work. The walls were then drywalled, mudded, sanded and primed. GSB then installed the floor tile absolutely perfectly. They followed through on my pattern flawlessly and the installer took great care to insure a proper installation. We opted for long and narrow tiles and if the thinset underneath is not perfect it can cause future cracking , the installer took his time to ensure our complete satisfaction. GSB did a great job of coordinating the timeliness of the subcontractor for cabinet delivery and installation.
One of our longest delays followed cabinet installation. We opted to go through GSB and their subcontractor for countertop installation and had already selected out stone, but there were several breakdowns in communication which resulted in a couple week delay. While this was a sore subject for a few days, I assure you that GSB took complete ownership of the issue and made the situation right in a way that was agreeable to both us and them. We never expected the project to be easy, but when snags do occur you need an organization that will own up to their promises and GSB did exactly that.
Backsplash tile installation followed the countertop install. Good news is that GSB sent the same crew back and like the floor work, the tile was installed exactly to specifications. Once this was complete, GSB coordinated the final electrical and plumbing work as well as painting. The operations manager came onsite for a physical assessment and the creation of a punch list of final to do?s and those tasks were completed expeditiously.
We have enjoyed out new kitchen now for just shy of two months and every day we are appreciative of the fine work that was done to bring us to this point. We recommend GSB and their crew.
Early communication with Gormley Environmental was very good. I was referred to this organization by a trusted friend with a lot of experience in remodeling apartments in our cooperative building. The work completed by Gormley Environmental was part of complete gut and remodel of a cooperative apartment kitchen. One of the walls within the kitchen contains an exhaust ventilation stack that is insulated with material known to contain asbestos. Because we were planning on removing a section of the wall next to the vent and re-building an adjacent wall, the demolition of the surrounding spaces and sealing of the vent stack cavity needed to be done with all safety precautions. In addition to this, the original tile floors and the mastic used in the original installation were also known to contain asbestos. Gormley Environmental completed the necessary wall demolition, sealing off of the ventilation stack and floor tile and mastic removal right down to the concrete sub-floor. The actual work was done to exact specifications and we couldn't be happier.
As with any large project there are bound to be minor mishaps that happen along the way. As it turns out, our project was delayed for 2 weeks due to a failure of communication within the Gormley Environmental organization. We had communicated to the contractor in writing the dates for the project work to start with the supporting documentation that our neighbors were informed about the asbestos abatement. However, the necessary communications by the contractor to the DC government were not completed. As such, the permits were not obtained in time and the project was delayed. The good news in all of this is that when I was dealing with the owner of the company he made right and no mistake. We appreciate when companies take ownership for their mistakes and Gormley Environmental did the right thing.
I hope that we don't have to do anymore asbestos abatement in the future, but if we need to, we would not hesitate for a moment to seek out Gormley Environmental.

During a chimney cleaning that we purchased on groupon, we had the Priddy team look at it and give us their opinion. Josue showed us where our chimney had been built with a sharp double curve that was causing smoke and gases to build up in the fire chamber and eventually backflow into the house. After doing some research online about how chimney's shoud be designed I was able to confirm that his theory made sense. He suggested that we have install a new chimney lining with a chimney top flue and cap. This would take out the double curve and allow a good flow of air. He provided an estimate of $1600 to do this work. He explained that most likely they would need to remove some bricks from the back of the firechamber to be able to access the chimney from the outside which would allow them to remove the old tile liner. On the day of the work he came back with one helper. After a more indepth review of the chimney he decided that he could remove the old liner from the top and avoid removing the bricks. Although more difficult, this method would avoid the issue of possibly having bricks that did not match in color with the existing brick and would be more aesthetically appealing. I know that he spent a significant amount of time removing old liner and inserting the new liner but the end result came out looking great. Josue and his helper did an excellent job cleaning up both inside and out and left no trace of their work behind. With the warm spring that we had I was not able to really test the fireplace until last weekend. We were able to get a fire going quickly and did not have any unwanted odors, even after burning a fire two nights in a row. In fact, I still need to clean the fireplace from the fires and still do not have any odors in the house. We are extremely satisfied with the work that Josue and Priddy did and highly recommend them for any fireplace related work. "Matthew (Matt) Hull, Seven Six Two Removal, and Brim Contracting LLC deserve ZERO stars. I rue the day I contracted with Matt Hull for my whole house renovation project, and only hope my warning can save others from a similar experience. Unless you enjoy paying twice for shoddy work, chasing down contractors, receiving false promises about timelines, being told repeatedly that your project isn’t making the contractor any money, having your project abandoned, and flirting with financial ruin, steer clear of Matt Hull and Seven Six Two Removal. Matt’s actions caused me significant financial losses— from the additional months of carrying costs, the extra payments in the tens of thousands to subsequent contractors to repair all his mistakes and finish the project, and from the lower sale price and incentives I had to offer to finally close a sales contract, a full 15 months after engaging with Matt Hull and Seven Six Two Removal. I don’t know if Matt is malicious or incompetent, but the results speak for themselves. Here’s just a sample of what I endured: -Mounds of trash and dangerous debris left everywhere. -Not a single room in the home was finished after six months—just a patchwork of poorly done and half-done jobs. -Only 50% of the interior was painted; the exterior was left half-painted with random substantial holes left open in the exterior brickwork of the home, resulting in dead birds and bird feces inside the house -Matt drywalled over the only kitchen HVAC vent (located in brand new ductwork in the ceiling bulkhead) and then installed a wall cabinet directly underneath the drywalled-over vent location. This was only discovered when investigating why the newly installed HVAC system wasn’t properly cooling the main floor. Correcting this issue cost additional time and money and risked significant damage to the new HVAC system. -Upstairs bathroom tile work was so bad that it looked like a middle school project—uneven, crooked, and sloped. It had to be gutted and reinstalled. -A toilet was installed incorrectly, causing plumbing headaches and extra bills. -Shower head in newly constructed basement bathroom installed off-center and, rather than correcting this obvious error, Matt tiled around it- making any future fix a major, expensive undertaking. -Vanity lights in the new bathroom installed off center on a tiled wall, requiring re installation and retiling of the area -Kitchen canned lights installed unevenly spaced, disregarding architectural drawings, and the kitchen feature light was not installed at all. Had to hire a professional to relocate the lights, patch and repaint multiple holes in the ceiling, and run new electrical wiring to properly power the fixtures that should have been installed in the first place. Kitchen cabinets and peninsula installed to the floor and walls incorrectly—had to pay a specialist to fix and reinstall. -Doors and doorways were measured and framed incorrectly, leading to wasted money, multiple door orders, and more delays. -Windows trimmed so poorly that standard coverings wouldn’t fit—had to customize every window covering. -Smoke/CO detector placed right next to a vent, a code violation. -Fence gate latch installed upside down, plus random holes cut in the fence. After abandoning the project nearly 11 months ago, Matt promised to return to work on my property “as soon as our schedule frees up.” Despite that promise, I never heard from Matt Hull or Seven Six Two Removal again. FAQs for asbestos abatement projects in Seabrook, MD
The cost for asbestos removal is between $1,200 and $3,200 for average homeowners. This cost could be as little as $450 or as high as $6,000, depending on the affected area's size, the location of the asbestos, and the type of asbestos you're dealing with.
For example, removing asbestos from attic insulation averages $11to $25 per square foot. However, removing asbestos from an HVAC unit is more expensive, at around $35 to $55 per square foot.
No, you should not remove asbestos from your home yourself. It is not worth risking your health, or the health of your family.
There are strict laws regarding the demolition, encapsulation, and removal of asbestos. Not only could you face potential violations, but you could be putting yourself and others at risk. If you don't have the proper asbestos removal gear, you could inhale the asbestos fibers, which could lead to lung cancer or mesothelioma.
Since DIY asbestos removal isn’t the best option to save money, there are other steps that you can take to help cut costs when dealing with this project. After speaking with your asbestos removal expert, discuss if encapsulation is an option. If it is, you can save between 15% to 25% on overall project costs over demolition and disposal. In addition, when speaking with your professional, discuss if there are any tax credits available for your removal project. Finally, check with your homeowner’s insurance to see if any removal costs might be covered. However, be aware that this is usually only applicable if the asbestos is due to a covered incident, like a tree falling into your roof.
It can be scary to need asbestos removal from your home—you might be concerned about your family’s health, the overall condition of your house, and what repairs might need to be done. You can ask your asbestos consultant some questions to ensure your project is completed as safely as possible. Some questions to ask include:
Do you have the proper credentials for removing and disposing of asbestos?
How long will this project take to complete?
Have you worked on a project like this before?
Do you use new protective gear at each job site?
How do you prevent asbestos fibers from being released into the home?
How big is the crew you will send?
How do you clean up after a project?
The most common sign of asbestos is the age of your home. Asbestos was banned in drywall in 1977, though many products still contained asbestos until the 1980s. Indicators of possible asbestos in your home include:
Your home's age, if built before 1980
You have a home with vinyl flooring or millboard that was installed between 1952 and 1982
Your home has corrugated roofing
Your home has walls made from cement sheets
Your home has vermiculite insulation
