"I worked with Austin about installing a patio and new landscaping off the back of my house. They came in and laid down pavers for a 15' x 20' patio in one day. On day 2, they finished up with the landscaping. The team transplanted some of the existing plants and brought in some new flowers to add some privacy to the patio and "fix" some issues we had with the original layout/design. So very pleased with the team's work and Austin is terrific. I look forward to enjoying our patio for many years to come."

Small jobs welcome

"Shorescapes did an outstanding job on complete landscape design and installation for our new home, including grading, irrigation, gutter drain extensions, stacked stone walls , hardscaping, sod, beds and plantings. The owner, Tim, was on site everyday with his crew and was immediately responsive to all of our requests - some that were not in the original plan. We also liked the fact that he started and finished the job on schedule. We would use him again and highly recommend this company."

Customers say: True professional

"It went very well. Boni was recommended to us and he was so professional and helpful when we met that we did not ask for quotes from other companies. He did not disappoint. The only delays were due to delays with raw material suppliers. Once the work began, the crew worked incredibly hard and cleaned up after each day’s work was completed. Boni was responsive to all questions. We plan to continue hiring him as we decide on additional landscaping and yearly clean-up."

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

After a house fire, you should not reenter your home unless the fire crew has told you it’s safe to do so. In the longer term, you should not attempt to make repairs to the house on your own. Professional crews are trained to clean up after a fire (including smoke and soot damage), dry out any water damage from the firefighter crews, and make the necessary structural, plumbing, and electrical repairs—and this is all likely covered by insurance.

Chimneys should either be sealed or waterproofed, which is different from sealing off—closing at both ends—a chimney. Waterproofing and sealing are both crucial steps to take to prevent water damage and the chimney leaking inside the house. While waterproofing is more comprehensive, both help safeguard your chimney, extending its life span and preventing expensive repairs.

It’s technically possible in some areas to install your own fire suppression system, but it’s usually not a good idea. Your system must conform to the fire code in your area and will need to pass a rigorous inspection before being activated and deemed safe. Installing a fire suppression system is a complicated job, and making mistakes as a DIYer is likely. Those mistakes can cause you to fail your inspection, which means you’ll have to spend more time fixing the issues or money to have a certified plumber do the work for you. It’s best to hire a professional.

If you plan to put a fire pit on a grassy area, be sure to put compacted paver sand down first to help level out the ground and add better heat protection. If you’re placing a fire pit on hardscaping, like a concrete patio, consider placing a fire pit mat down first. This can add more protection from the heat and also protect the look of your hardscaping if you choose to remove the fire pit in the future.

Some Christmas lights are marked as being “UL Safety Certified” or Underwriters Laboratories Safety Certified. This lab is a trusted source for determining the safety standards of electrical products—you should make sure your Christmas lights have this label. Brush up on other electrical safety tips before installing any lighting features.
