Due to a minor water leak a section of drywall about 8' x 2' had been cut out. The trim in this area and on the other side of the hall plus a closet had to be placed as well. The drywall and trim had been removed due to a small amount of mold from the water leak.  I called George's painting due to all the great reviews here on Angie's list.  I received an estimate on this work and in addition I asked for an estimate on some painting.  I thought the estimate was very fair. George was extremely professional and even came to look at what the job entailed late on a Friday evening as he was returning from other jobs on his way back to his office. This was absolutely fine with me as I had no plans to go anywhere.  George sent my estimate first thing Monday morning.

In the end I used George's only for the drywall and trim work. The job was easily scheduled and the 2 man crew did an outstanding job. I couldn't even tell there had been any damage. The trim work was outstanding as well with nice miter cuts. It lined up well with the existing molding where the miter cuts met.  It only took them approximately 4 hours to do the job.  I plan to call George's in the future for outside painting of my house.

"They gave an estimate to replace the sump pump motor. The first guy who came estimated it at $875 after a coupon discount and I gave him a (check) deposit on the work. Ten minutes after he left he rang the doorbell to say that he'd talked with the owner and since I lived so far from their office (I'm in Montgomery County, MD; they're in PA) they couldn't do the job for less than $1800. I replied that if they only wanted to do local jobs then they shouldn't advertise so far from home! I declined the $1800 price. A couple of weeks later I got a call from a woman at the company saying the owner had reviewed the bid and could do the job for less than $1800. No matter how many times I asked, they wouldn't give me a price over the phone. Finally I scheduled a second estimate appointment and the new guy said they could do it for $1700. Whoo-hoo, a whole $100 savings. This new estimate included a new sump pit and a french drain, no doubt added to justify the higher price. After some misgivings I decided to go ahead and use them rather than act as my own subcontractor to hire a plumber AND a drywall person AND a mold killer. One yahoo (Tom) and another non-yahoo (name unknown) showed up to do the work. As soon as they brought in the new pit cover my forehead creased as I realized there was no way that cover was going to fit in the space (way too big). Apparently I was the only one able to come to this conclusion so quickly because an hour later yahoo Tom announced that the 18 inch pit they'd brought wouldn't fit in the space available between the furnace and the water heater. (Coulda told you that at one glance, Tom!) I suggested that perhaps other sizes of pits were available even though that was the only size Thompson carried. He squinted at me for several long seconds before concluding that I needed to talk with "the office" about that. I did, and Keith agreed that other sizes might be available. He said he'd check with my nearby Home Depot while Tom took himself off to said Home Depot to try to get the pit. He came back, announcing that Home Depot only had the same size as his, so they would just replace the motor. He didn't offer any discount considering that they weren't replacing the pit. This required another call from me to the office, where Keith announced he'd knock $100 off the price as that was the price of the pit. He didn't offer a discount off the labor, but agreed to knock an additional $100 off the job. They did a nice job on the french drain and finished more quickly than I'd expected. In his sum-up instructions, Tom told me I needed to wait a month (not a week as the salesman had said) to replace the drywall in order to allow the mold killer to "bloom". When I asked him how I'd know if the mold killer had "bloomed" Tom said "I don't know cuz I ain't never seen that." Wow, that was helpful. If I'd known I'd have to wait a month to replace the drywall and more importantly re-hook up the washer and dryer I'd no doubt have made other laundry decisions pre-job. Three weeks post-repair, with no sign of anything resembling "blooming' in the treated area, I called the company and eventually spoke to Keith, who said he didn't know what Tom was talking about and that it would have been safe to replace the drywall after a week. BOTTOM LINE: unless you have a major waterproofing job to be done, avoid this company. The second estimator pointed out to me that their job minimum is $2500, so they were clearly stooping (my phrasing) to do my job."

"Excellent service and reasonable price.  The added feature of preventive instructions to avoid the problem in the future was very much appreciated.   Vince was great and we highly recommend him.  We will definitely use him again if the need arises.  See also comments above."

"John Schuber from the company visited on both days while workers were here.  Both remediation technicians were professional, courteous, arrived at appointed time, and worked a full day.  Always covered floor in our entryway so would not mar it. Technicians wore protective equipment and changed their suits 3 times daily. First day, erected containment area at top of basement stairs, removed moldy drywall and applied sealant to concrete wall, wiped down entire area and all items in that area with chemical to kill all mold and spores, vacuumed area with HEPA filtered equipment, ran air scrubbers all day and overnight. Second day wiped down entire area and items again with chemical, revacuumed area with HEPA filtered equipment, and left air scrubbers to run a couple of days over Christmas. Returned and removed their equipment and containment material.

"It went pretty smoothly. One of the best contractors I have had from Choice Home Warranty. Century Restoration Maintenance, LLC and owner PeAyre Gardner were awesome. I have had CHW several years and I wanted to cancel because every thing we called about they denied the claim. My husband decided to keep them. I was pleasantly surprised that they fixed both the leak and drywall in the ceiling from the leak. I did have to provide extra pics from the leak before it was approved as initially the claim was denied."

"EXCELLENT PROFESSIONAL SERVICE!  Called them cold on a Sunday night from my DC home to repair many shingle caps that had blown off the peak of our roof of our townhome in OC- I could see daylight from the attic and the insulation was wet.  They were on my roof Monday morning, in the rain, fixing it completely.  They took before and after photos on the roof so I could see exactly what they had done. They also replaced a cracked vent pipe boot.
Very easy to deal with, good communications, knowledgeable and professional.

"I hired Chuck to help restore and paint my 110 year old home. This house was no small project as it is four stories high, includes 3 dormers, and had an ugly peeling paint job all over. Not only that but I wasn't sure what colors I wanted to use. I was very lucky to get Chuck and his crew. I've dealt with several contractors who do okay work but I could tell Chuck had a passion for helping me restore my home. He gave me several suggestions out of the Benjamin Moore catalogue of historical colors where I found a set I really liked. He had about a 4wk lead time until he was ready to start my home and during this he gave all sorts of tips on how to do some work myself and even bought me the supplies (Duramax paint, rollers, buckets, 5 in 1 tool) his crew would use so I could do some DIY. This helped me immensely and I got a good bit of work done. He showed up when he said he would begin the job and he and his crew worked tirelessly for nine days straight. This included a lot of scraping and prep work, some wood repair for damaged clapboards, painting my gutters and down spouts, and extensive caulking of the siding and around every window (20+ widows on the house). They put 50+ tubes of caulk into my home to seal it and they had to rent a lift to reach the dormers and top of the house. There were times when those guys worked 8am to 8pm. These guys spent a lot of time on the prep to get the surface right and a lot of time around each window to seal it properly. The end result was beautiful restored home. Chuck did extras for me as well including fixing my antique front door, added a new front and rear porch light that looked historical to match the house, reattached a fallen gutter, and added a long horizontal board along the bottom which not only protected some of the weaker clapboard but also was a good aesthetic choice. More over my house has a lot of trim and Chuck had the idea to paint some trim the body color so there were less lines overall and it really looks amazing. The bottom line is Chuck has been doing this for a long time and has a lot of experience and it really shows. His crew was solid and worked very hard. They didn't just do the minimum but added some nice details and extras and having someone that cares about their work goes a long way. They cleaned up nice and we had no disputes about labor or payment. I would personally rehire them for additional work and would also highly recommend them for future jobs."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

With its breathability and flexibility, lime plaster is among the most durable of all plaster types. It's also fire-resistant and has a proven track record, as people have been using it for thousands of years.

However, all plaster types will last for many years with the right care and treatment. Proper preparation and installation will also help ensure your plaster walls look great for as long as possible.

The cost to install drywall is between $1.50 and $3 per square foot, while shiplap installation costs between $2 and $7 on average. In most applications, shiplap installations cost more than that of putting in drywall. However, several ways exist to reduce shiplap prices, especially for small locations or accent walls, which can keep the total cost of shiplap competitive with that of drywall.

Walls should be as smooth as possible before applying peel-and-stick wallpaper. Although you technically can apply wallpaper on textured walls, the peel-and-stick variety won’t last long without a clean, smooth surface for the adhesive to stick to. If you have textured walls, consult a pro about removing the textured finish before moving forward with wallpaper.

Drywall insulation costs around $1,800, on average, but prices can range from $500 to $4,500, depending on a few different factors. The following things are important considerations to make when pricing out your insulation project:

  • Square footage of insulation

  • Type of insulation

  • Climate in your area and the insulation R-value required

  • Whether or not your walls are already finished

  • Accessibility of the area

  • Whether or not you need old insulation removed first

Yes, you can put paneling over textured walls. Of course, this will come down to personal preference and the type of paneling you want to install. From board-and-batten to shiplap and wainscoting, there are plenty of options to choose from.
