"Dwayne was outstanding with communicating his status, plans, and kept the area neat while he worked to replace the ceiling drywall in 2 areas of my kitchen (due to 2 separate bathrooms leaking on my 2nd floor). He arrived early each day and worked diligently to rebuild my kitchen area after the bathroom floods. We are so thankful that he was able to tackle this nightmare home project. He was outstanding!!"

"Luisa was very professional, knowledgeable, and efficient. She installed outside light fixtures, bathroom towel bars, and repaired drywall. She cleaned up the areas she worked in. I would definitely recommend her and will be calling on her in the future."

"My retaining had completely collapsed and I was dreading the cost and time of the repair. I reached out to other contractors who didn’t return calls or didn’t show up to scheduled appointments. Corey with C & K Handyman responded quickly with a very reasonable quote. They did excellent work and I couldn’t be happier with the results!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Technically speaking, you can use drywall primer over plasters. However, oil-based primers work the most effectively on wall plasters. Meanwhile, water-based primers work just as well with drywalls. Nowadays, there are also universal primers suitable for drywall and plaster. Overall, you will be fine as long as you are using a trustworthy brand.

Most handy homeowners can tackle removing texture from unpainted walls. Removing texture from painted walls is a bit trickier. Paint acts as a sealant, so you can’t soften the texture with water. Instead, you’ll have to add a layer of drywall compound known as a skim coat. This process is messy and takes some practice.

There are several things you should not do when installing drywall. Common mistakes include: adding too many screws, over-sanding, not adding backing support, and installing drywall unevenly. You also should avoid screwing into the same place twice, installing Sheetrock with tapered edges on the outside, and making too many joints.

Drywall anchors won’t work on plaster. Instead, they will more than likely cause more damage and pull out the plaster. The best type of anchors to use on plaster walls are the ones that will bite into the surrounding area, such as molly bolts and toggle bolts. Masonry anchors with expanders on the sides also work for lighter pictures.

Which style of corner bead you choose—whether metal or paper-faced—depends on your preference and if you’re comfortable using metal-cutting tools and a hammer. Metal bead offers superior strength and durability but its installation is slightly more involved. We’d say for most cases, it’s better to use metal bead but if you’re not comfortable working with metal, paper-faced bead will work just fine.
