"Mr. Saffer came to our home in late January / early February to give a free estimate on some work, and take a look at our gas boiler, which was not working to heat our home (the week of a 2' blizzard). He was prompt and did a thorough job of listening to our needs and helping to solution them. The heating system ended up being something that was totally miniscule and he fixed it on the spot with no charge -- who knew that "mystery switch" in the stairwell turned off the heat to the house!?
Anyway, they were set to install a garbage disposal (which needed a sub-contracted electrician), and to remove old pipes that were smaller than today's standard for a disposal pipe, and replace those with new, larger pipes.
When they came out to do the work, the main plumber, Jason, was very professional, honest and upfront about how the job would progress for the day, and went the extra mile to make sure he and his partner did a great job. The sub-contracted electrician was also extremely professional, and went so far as to discover wiring that was already installed so that our disposal could be switched from the counters, rather than underneath in a cabinet.
We later had an issue where the disposal had "torqued" itself lose from the drain a little bit, causing some leaking. The on-call plumber was at our home within an hour, and spent a VERY thorough two hours fixing the problem, then spent 10-15 minutes explaining exactly what happened, why, and what to do if it happens again. Apparently as a sound-dampening system, the disposal has a rubber gasket that can allow for this "torquing" and he made us aware so that we know what it is if it happens again.
Over all, I have been very satisfied with the experience, and would recommend Saffer to anyone who is looking for a good, local plumber to do work.
*As a note to the one "B" I gave -- pricing. As a local business, I am willing to spend a little more to support a local business, and in this case, there was a slightly lower estimate given from another company. However, when Mr. Saffer came out for our free estimate, we never thought our heat would be working by the time he left, and he fixed it for free without flinching. That was really awesome. We were super desperate, and he came to our rescue within hours. Then, to follow that, the work they did (and follow-up support) was top-notch.

"

My 1952 house was not equipped with a vent, nor proper traps for either the washing machine or sink. There were sewer gases backing up on occasion, into the sink area, which is of course unpleasant.

Robert installed the traps, then came back to add the vent to the outside of the house. He did not have to go through the attic and roof. The end result looks like it was built with the house, and blends in well with the exterior.

He responds to my need for help either instantly or within 24 hours, is professional and knows his business. Anyone he hires is up to his standards, and those are very high. Having a reliable and qualified plumber is key to survival, and for that need, I go to Robert!!

"Job went very well. We have used James Fama several times and have always been happy with the job. James arrived on time, did the job promptly and left the area clean. His price was very fair. We had a new comfort level installed in a second bathroom and are very pleased with the job."

"Bill Martins Flood Crew is excellent. In December, just before Christmas, my finished rec room flooded when my sump pump failed--soaked carpet, cardboard boxes, books, furniture with sewer water. I thought I would not find anybody this time of year to help me. But I called Bill Martins from Flood Crew, and he came out right away. He looked at the basement and gave me an analysis of my damage on the spot. He was wonderful. He took care of getting detailed estimates to my insurance company and then made arrangements for me with all the needed specialists. First, I wouldn't have known where to start, and second I wouldn't have had a clue whom to call. I needed crews to remove the carpet, cut out drywall all around to dry it out, check for mold, test for asbestos, and then remove everything. And, of course, fixing the sump pump, installing flooring, putting everything back, and lots of details in between. All of this obviously can't be completed in a week or even a month. My work was not the only project that busy contractors had. My situation was far more complicated than I thought it would be. Ultimately, it took four months, which I thought was very reasonable. And the result is so beautiful--no corners cut, no putting up with mediocre results, all this for the same price and time or less than others quote. Be patient. Be flexible. Talk with Bill about the results you want. Listen to suggestions. Your results will be beyond anything you thought was possible."

"Fidel is fantastic. He was able to match paint colors, suggested & used the right products to prevent the problem (mold from steamy bathrooms) and did a beautiful paint job. Treated, cleaned, painted in 2 days with 2 assistants. We ran into an unforseen obstacle, my bathroom fans were not hooked to vents. He gave me guidance on purchasing fans & brought his electrician in for correct installation. Because of an issue in my ceiling, we cannot vent through the walls as planned. He was going to use HVAC suggestions to vent through the roof, but he stopped & called some experts who told him that I could suffer leaks if I don't use a skilled roofer. We will have a roofer do the vents. Fidel only charged me for the work done. He'll come back to install fans after that."

"There was something that was in the drain so that when water was going in one direction it would be fine but if there there was something down the disposal it would flip it and the it would have a clog and they cleared that. They were straight forward, they got the job done proficiently and professionally."

"Awesome. James tore out the old corner shower, pointed out the ways which the original builder cut corners, made mistakes and implemented our re-design which included expanding the shower out another 2' and making it completely open. Installed the difficult pebble floor and hand-cut every pebble at the edge to make a perfect joint with the base wall tile. All work was done to perfectionist standard. James was alway on time, communicated well and even jammed some extra hours in day to get the job done before my wife arrived home from vacation. All in all, excellent work."

"We we were completely satisfied with our experience at Advanced Granite — from the time we walked through the door and met Shelby until our installation was complete. We purchased a remnant piece of granite for a new vanity we had installed in our guest bathroom - a small project to say the least. Everyone at Advanced Granite treated us like we were their best customer. Great quality product and work."

"I think I talked directly to the owner. Porcelite scheduled service within a week. Technician arrived a few minutes early, got the job done, presented the bill and got out of my hair. I didn't even need to move my sink cabinet which is within a couple of inches of the tub."

Install Garbage Disposal questions, answered by experts

As with many appliances, proper maintenance is key to maximizing your garbage disposal’s life span. If everyone in your household is on board with proper care and maintenance, like running water while operating the disposal, you should get plenty of years out of your unit. Avoid putting the wrong food items down the disposal, including pasta, rice, bread, and more.

Your garbage disposal will only affect the health of your septic tank if you’re using it too frequently, or filling it with organic waste that doesn’t fully break down. If the tank fills up with too many solids, the bacteria won’t have enough time to consume it before more is added, which can lead to an overflow in the drain field. Your tank will need to be pumped more frequently with excessive or improper garbage disposal use.

No, you do not need a garbage disposal to have a dishwasher. A dishwasher will work without one, and while it's rare to see a home with a dishwasher that doesn't have a disposal, it is possible. The two appliances pair well and are often installed together because a disposal simplifies meal cleanup.

However, your dishwasher should not be used as a replacement for a garbage disposal. Subjecting it to continuous food leftovers can lead to major clogs. If you choose not to install a garbage disposal, you should thoroughly rinse your plates or scrape excess food into the trash or a compost pile before loading them into the dishwasher to prevent plumbing issues.

While the drain connection for a garbage disposal is nearly universal and fits standard sink drain holes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, the size of the disposal unit itself is not. You must have enough space in the cabinet underneath your sink to accommodate the disposal's housing. A larger model may not fit in a compact cabinet or if the existing plumbing is arranged in an unusual way. Before buying a new garbage disposal, measure the available space under your sink. If you are replacing an old unit, it's often easiest to choose a new model of a similar size.

Once you have your garbage disposal disconnected, you can remove the mounting bracket by unscrewing the bolts that are holding the bracket. You can back them out just enough to pop off the snap ring, which prevents the bottom portion of the bracket from disconnecting from the top when you unscrew the bolts. Use a regular screwdriver to pop off the snap ring, and the rest of the components should fall off by themselves.
