"I’m back again to write another stellar review for GAC. Last year they replaced our HVAC system; this year we circled back and had them install a home generator. This was a long and drawn out process due to the various approvals needed from Montgomery County as well as coordination with Washington Gas (which ended up not just being a simple sign off but necessitating an additional, expensive upgrade to the gas line from the street to our home). Nevertheless, GAC did a fantastic job shepherding this process over the 6+ months of waiting on stakeholders, and they were also maximally accommodating to our family’s significant constraints on time and availability (due to health concerns related to a medically fragile family member). A special kudos to Sandy M, GAC’s master electrician, who took it on personally to ensure we were taken care of all throughout this process, going above and beyond with phone calls, text messages, personal visits, etc. on behalf of my family, I want to thank GAC and am giving top marks across the board for this effort which was complex , lengthy, and ultimately successful."

"Overall I was very satisfied with my experience. They responded to my call quickly and gave me a detailed quote. The recessed lighting (which was the main project) was installed with minimal drywall damage and looks great. They also provided me the contact information for a handyman who they knew would be able to do the minor drywall repairs to my textured ceiling. I was less happy with my bathroom vent fan installation. Since the bathroom is in the middle of the second floor of my rowhome, I had made it clear that they would either need to outlet it through the roof or run the outlet through the ceiling of a bedroom to outlet out the back wall. They quoted me a price for this extra work and told me it could be done. However once they started working they realized they couldn't outlet it through the backwall and were unwilling to outlet it through the flat roof. They still installed the exhaust fan, but it now outlets into the gap between the ceiling and the roof. It's been a headache trying to get someone to do the outlet install; in the mean time and I have a plastic bag taped over the exhaust fan to try and prevent any steam from getting into my walls...but I have no idea how well that's working. Since there was a line-item for the outlet install, they immediately agreed to lower the price when that work was not done. The electrician, Mikey, was very respectful and did to very good work, but he was usually arrived about an hour later than I was told he would. I'm not sure if that was a problem with him or a miscommunication back at the office. Moral of the story: if you need something that's strictly electrical, these guys are great. If you need something that requires electrical + another area of expertise...you might be better off with a handyman or general contractor."

"It went great! Professional, quick to call and discuss the request. What I like the most was their genuine interest in helping me fast. They gave me an estimate the same day and the job was performed in less than 48 hours. I would definitely hire Green Electric for my future requirements. Thanks Mr. Darnell!"

"He found an electrical problem that Potomac Edison arrived to do a emergency repair. It was a fire hazard. So thankful he found the problem and did an excellent install with our Generator."

FAQs for generator install projects in Lisbon, MD

When maintained properly, a whole-house generator can last up to 20 years. Costs to maintain and repair generators vary by location and type of generator, but you can expect to pay about $150 to $300 per year for annual generator maintenance checks. An experienced generator service technician will inspect your generator’s engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels to keep your generator in good working condition for as long as possible.

Installing a whole-house generator costs about $5,000 on average. Prices range from $1,550 to $8,500, depending on size, brand, fuel type, and assembly. The size of your whole-house generator is the most significant cost factor, with large homes with high energy demands costing the most to power. Types of whole-home generators include:

  • Portable generators with 1kW–7.5kW capacity: $500–$2,000

  • Partial generators with 9kW–20kW capacity: $2,000–$6,300

  • Whole-house generators with 22kW–48kW: $5,000–$18,000

When choosing the right size generator for your needs, consider a few items to help calculate the wattage you’ll need. Start by determining which household items and appliances you want to power, and then add the wattages together. Check out the wattage of these essential appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 watts

Running home appliances like these requires a partial or whole-house generator. A portable generator may be enough to power your home if you only plan to keep a refrigerator and freezer running.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

The value of installing a whole-house generator is that your home has guaranteed power, even if the power grid in your area is down. Whether a whole-house generator is worth installing in your home depends on how often you use it, your home’s location, and your lifestyle. For example, installing a whole-house generator is likely worth it if you:

  • Experience frequent or prolonged power outages

  • Work from home

  • Store a lot of cold food

  • Have a sump pump

  • Have a pump for well water

  • Use electronic medical devices

  • Live in a climate requiring heating or cooling
