Customers say: Quality work

"Wilson is a skilled craftsman who has rescued so many of my fine antique pieces over the last 15 years. He is extremely talented and very easy to work with. I have given him broken, stained, desiccated and otherwise damaged wooden items that he has restored to their original beauty. I find his prices quite moderate and his work exceptional."

"Amazing craftsmanship and quality work. I highly recommend Bill for any of your handyman needs. We we're selling our house and needed him to touch-up some items and he knocked it out of the park for a very reasonable price. Bill was always on time and was very trustworthy. Look no further for your handyman needs!"

"We are a repeat customer of Adam Contracting and will continue to use the company. They have done an excellent job on everything we've hired them to do; this project was no exception. The room looks great! For this project, Adam Contracting redid wainscotting in the room and added a shelf, did wall repair, installed crown molding, painted the walls and trim, and installed a light fixture."

"They did great work painting our extensive exterior wood trim, repairing a section of our fascia, and installing an outdoor light. The technicians and the JW main office were both a pleasure to work with. The great thing about these guys is that if they discover a problem, they can almost always fix it themselves, since they have all the relevant skills. We have hired them often in the past and will not hesitate to do so again."

"The railings were great quality and the installer did a great job. Was disappointed they didn t coat the wooden balusters and railings with polyurethane. We had someone else do that. They need to provide more details during the sales visit, including better samples of wood finishes and samples or good pictures of baluster options."

"After consideration, I have decided to put off this project until a later time. However, the advice and service I received from Apex Rremodelling was terrific and I will definitely hire them to do the painting and carpeting of my rental property in the future."

"We have used Mr. Handyman several times and have been very happy with their work. The first time we used them was when we first moved into our new house and needed a few odd jobs done, such as a stair railing fixed, some large pictures hung on the wall, etc. We were amazed at how much the handyman was able to get done in such a small amount of time and everything was done perfectly. The last time we had them come out was for the demo of our old kitchen countertops, sink, and backsplash. The work done was great, especially considering that the backsplash would not come off easily and took most of the drywall off with it - he repaired/replaced the damaged drywall - it just took much longer than anticipated - which at approximately $100/hour - cost much more than we had budgeted."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Board and batten is a type of wainscotting that uses wider boards that are placed vertically, and it has a much more rustic aesthetic than wainscotting. Common wainscotting styles are raised-panel, flat-panel, and beadboard. Wainscotting is more intricate and will typically use more elegant, subtle trims compared to the more farmhouse-inspired boards of board and batten styles.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface materials can be cut with standard woodworking tools, such as a circular saw or a jigsaw. However, it is crucial to use the correct type of blade to avoid damaging the material.

For a circular saw, a tungsten carbide-tipped blade is required; a triple chip grind blade is highly recommended. For a jigsaw, you should use a fine-tooth down-cutting blade. Do not use blades designed for cutting wood, as they can cause microfractures that weaken the edges of the countertop. A diamond blade is also unnecessary, as those are designed for harder materials like natural stone, which Corian is not.

After cutting, the edge will be rough. It is essential to sand and smooth the cut edge to prevent microfractures, which can eventually compromise the integrity of the countertop.

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

Before hiring a carpenter, the most important thing is to make sure they are properly qualified and insured for the job. It’s more than reasonable to ask your prospective carpenter for customer references, as well as about their licensing and insurance. You should also consider choosing a carpenter that specializes in your specific project area to ensure high-quality results.

Whether or not it’s easier to cut wood when it’s wet versus dry depends largely on the type of tool you use and the wood you’re cutting. For example, a chain saw should still be able to cut through wet wood with relative ease, but it may be more difficult to maneuver due to the wood fibers sticking to the chains of the saw.

However, you might want to avoid cutting wood entirely when it’s wet if you’re pruning your tree. Sawing a wet tree that you don’t plan on removing can also encourage bacterial and fungal growth and decay.
