"This review is from work done last year. Mr. Handyman review 11/28/2018: Mr. Handyman (Eric V) sent a text with picture to say he was on the way. Overall, was very pleased with the work done and will use them again. Items fixed: Installed door sweep for the front entryway. Works fine. Took care of the draft. Replaced screen on porch door, and also stabilized the door frame. Working great."

"The technician, Fredy Aguilar, did great work installing a new sliding closet door and repairing another closet door. The new closet door looks and works great and the old door works better than it did we when moved into our house."

"The sales person who originally came out was very nice and explained things well. The gentlemen who came out also were very professional and helped with repairing my siding out there. I'd recommend home genius to my friends and family."

"Mr. Smith returned my inquiry as I made a few but he was the only one that came through on my terms.  Bill has been very down to earth and respectful to my needs and requests.  He writes a good contract with no underlying issues to worry about.  I had several settlement problems with the drywall in my three story townhouse and wanted one room repainted.  The drywall separation could have been a result of the earthquake in the DC area last August 2010.  If I wanted to put my house on the real estate market, these things would definitely need to be repaired.  Also, I was sick of noticing them and prefer the house in tip-top shape.  My master bedroom has cathedral ceiling and I wanted this huge room and skylight vanity area repainted.   I am pleased with his helpfulness and the quality of work. He's still working but it should be completed in a day.  It's been a seven-day project."

Small jobs welcome

"Hired to weed , mulch and edge beds. Found out he also did painting so I asked him to do an exterior painting and repair project. Did both jobs simultaneously and I was happy with both. I will call him again when the need arises."

"I can't say enough good things about Bob and his team. He was the only tinting company I actually got a call back from the first day, and worked hard to provide incredible services within my tight window (no pun intended!). Bob was knowledgeable, friendly, and flexible, and the installer Mike was very talented and punctual. Bob warned of a potential for small cracks between the window and the tint but you would have thought the tint was a part of the actual window. I would hire them 100x over and cannot recommend them enough."

Window Shutter Repair questions, answered by experts

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.
