"Outdoor Advantage has done 2 jobs for us, one a small stone patio and the other a major front yard landscaping with digging out 2 large tree stumps, and then grading, planting, sod, and a small stone wall. They have just done a tremendous job in all respects, with timely service, great attention to detail, and coming back to fix some small things that made it perfect. Great job!! Will definitely use again, and recommend to all."

"Blue Crab Home Solutiuons is an awesome home improvement company to work with. Both Nick and Zach were informative when they came to appraise the work I wanted done, they understood exactly what I wanted and they also made great suggestions to install a railing and gate on my front porch and install pavers on my walkway leading to the porch. Zach helped me select the perfect pavers for the project. I can't say enough good things about the workers who did the job. They were courtious, on time, fast and efficient. They kept me informed as they progressed to completion of the job. I highly recommend Blue Crab for any home improvement project no matter how small or large it may be. I will definitely call on them for any projects I need done in the future."

Customers say: Quality work

"Mr. and Mrs. Howe along with their team of professionals transformed the entire back yard of my Ellicott City townhouse from grass/weeds to a beautiful hardscape surface. Great quality, extremely efficient from start to finish, overall a wonderful experience. Will be reaching out to them again in the Spring to transform the front yard, I consider them landscaping/hardscaping, "Alchemists"."

"We couldn't be happier with Hoffman Landscaping! The workmanship is high quality and the job was done on time and on budget. We had just rescued two dogs, and wanted to get our yard fenced in as soon as possible. Hoffman worked our fence install into their busy schedule, and returned soon after to install our paver walkway and patio. We love to sit on our new patio and watch our dogs run around the yard!"

"J&W did a wonderful job building my brick steps and concrete walk way to the front of my home. A quick quote and a great price considering the current market for bricks and concrete. Mr. Brown went the extra mile and I will be utilizing this company next week to replace the side entrance steps. I highly recommend!"

"Distinctive Landscaping did a major project behind our house that completely changed the looks of the back yard. We had lived in the house for 32 years and this was a project I had thought about many times, but I had to find the right landscape designer to implement it. Kurt was that person. He listened to my vision and came up with a design which was modified several times until it was ready to go. The area behind the house had erosion problems and he planned a retaining wall that solved this and flowed into a walkway that curved behind the porch and deck. Kurt dropped off samples of stone pavers in different colors and we are very happy with the choice we made. The work began in December, 2017, then had to be delayed because the ground was frozen to a greater depth than in most winters. When the elements allowed work resumed. The crew was exceptional, not hurrying, but doing precision work. We were so pleased that we decided to redo our 22 year old flagstone patio using the same stone pavers. Shrubs were added along part of the walkway. Four shrubs were also planted in the front yard. The work spanned almost three months (mostly due to weather related interruptions) and by Spring, the back yard had a whole new look with a walkway and patio that we could use and enjoy."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

The longevity of flood walls depends on how they were constructed, but most wood, gravel, and cement flood walls last 10 years. While aluminum flood walls may cost far more initially, they can be a good investment as they can last decades and will not be damaged by exposure to the elements.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.

Proper design and construction prevent erosion and add structural stability to landscapes.
