"

The man I had my previous HVAC service contract with passed away in January and, before he died, he sold his service contracts to GAC.  I learned of this in two letters I received just about the time my spring service was due, one letter from the old company, explaining the death and sale, along with a letter from GAC welcoming me.  Since they had my money I figured I?d give them a try.  I called GAC on a Monday and scheduled my spring maintenance for Thursday.  On Tuesday my A/C made a horrendous noise and I shut it off.  Called GAC to ask if we could move the visit up to Wednesday and they said ?sure?.  Tech arrived on time on Wednesday, explained that my 19 year old system might not have too many years left.  I could spend $1,000 to replace the fan motor and cross my fingers that the condenser didn't go next, or invest in a new Furnace and A/C.  He patiently answered all my questions, we went over the pros and cons, and he didn?t talk down to me (which frequently happens as I am an older woman), under the circumstances it was a wonderful experience.  While he worked up the estimate for a new system in the van I did a computer search of the company and how much a new HVAC system should cost.  I figured I could spend weeks shopping around, but I had travel scheduled for much of April and really didn?t have time for that.  I lucked out, there were several rebates available in April from Washington Gas, PEPCO and Bryant, all of which the tech explained.  I was given two proposals with two different models, I accepted GAC?s proposal on the spot and they had their Quality Assurance man in my house on Thursday taking measurements and answering my questions (he also arrived right on time).  A new Furnace and Air Conditioner were installed on Monday, the furnace passed inspection yesterday, and everything is working well.  The new system is so much quieter than my old system and it appears to be very efficient.  Everyone I worked with at GAC was wonderful, very nice, professional, answered all my questions.  The three man team who installed the system was so upbeat for a Monday morning, I was amazed.  They arrived on time and went right to work like a well oiled machine.  One started outside on the Air Conditioner while the other began tearing out the furnace, the third was floating, helping each of the others, while unloading the trucks.  They had to work in a very tight closet like space but I never heard any grumbling.  They sang along with their music, truly seemed to like each other and they answered my questions as they worked.  They didn?t seem to be bothered by the fact that I checked in on them often.  A very different experience than the one I had 19 years ago when the old system was installed!  They warned me that, because of the area was tight, it could take up to 6 hours to complete, which it did.  They started a little after 8:00 and were done by 4:00. They left the area spotless and took their time walking me through the operation of the new thermostat, how to send in for the rebates and how to call for the county inspection.  All in all, I am happy I stayed with GAC Services and would highly recommend them.

"After having a very bad experience with another HVAC company, I used them and quickly saw how the other HVAC company was over charging. I found my technician to be very knowledgeable, hardworking and honest. He repaired one AC unit and replaced the other. Would definitely recommend!"

"I found Edwin on HomeAvisor/Angie's List. We were having some heat issues and wanted to have some basic maintenance. Edwin 'had extensive knowledge about each of our systems, and was able to troubleshoot and provide us with various courses of action. The attic heat pump was replaced and he was very fair with his prices. They did an excellent job, and sympathizes with his customers. He replaced the system on a Saturday."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

No. HVAC, which stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, includes all of the systems that work together to regulate a building’s temperature and humidity levels. In comparison, air conditioners only provide cooling. You can have an air conditioner as part of your HVAC system, but not all HVAC systems include air conditioners.

While it's generally safe to stay in a home with a coolant leak if your home is properly ventilated, it's important to have a professional come out to assess the situation right away. You should evacuate your home if you notice any powerful fumes. Additionally, you should leave your home if you are experiencing headaches or dizziness.

Yes, a dirty air filter can cause a higher electric bill. That’s because clogged filters make it harder for air to flow through your HVAC system, which forces it to work harder and use more energy. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing dirty filters can save you between 5% and 15% in utility costs.

You should only run your dehumidifier in warmer months, such as spring and summer, to get the best performance out of your system. The air gets drier when temperatures drop in the winter months, creating less of a need for a dehumidifier. However, when to run a dehumidifier will depend on your local climate.

There are ways to detect a refrigerant leak with several different testing methods. However, most homeowners can figure out something’s wrong with their AC unit by noticing these common signs:

  • Ice forming on the evaporator coil

  • Water leaks near the AC unit

  • Frequent hissing sounds

  • Increased electric bills

  • Unit takes longer than usual to cool

  • Unit is blowing hot air
