"These guys were fast, professional, and respectful of my property. They even secured both gates before leaving. I am so happy with the job they did. My budget was tight and they got the job done in no time. My yard looks absolutely amazing and the edge work was fantastic! They even blew off the hard surfaces leaving a polished job. Hire them! "We were about to scrap our project after the first contractor Beltway Builders came out for an estimate. The price they quoted was so high we were going to forgoe this project and spend the money elsewhere. The 7th state builders came out and their representative Dan was knowledgeable, professional and worked with me to come up with a design we loved and met our budget which was half the price quoted by Beltway Builders. It really felt like he cared more about our satisfaction than getting as much money as he could from us."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Buying plants from a nursery is one thing, but ensuring that they are properly planted is another. While you might not need to hire a landscaper for every plant that you buy from a nursery, it’s a great idea to have their expertise and experience to plant larger items, like burlapped trees or specialty plants like rose bushes. Even better, before making a trip to a nursery to buy new plants, consult a local landscaper to test your soil for pH levels, soil texture, and phosphorus and potassium levels to help determine the best plants for your area.

In most cases, buying plants from a local greenhouse or nursery is well worth the investment, even though they tend to be a bit more expensive than those at a home improvement store. Employees at nurseries are usually well-versed in gardening and understand how the climate in your area affects different plants. They can help you make selections based on your skill level and time commitment to your landscaping, and they can provide detailed care instructions and advice to help keep your plants alive and diagnose and treat issues like pest infestation and illness.

As much as you might try to keep a healthy, nutrient-rich lawn, you still may notice signs of St. Augustine decline (SAD)—a viral disease that discolors your grass blades. St. Augustine decline looks like:

  • Discoloration in the leaves (chlorosis)—leaves appear yellow and splotchy

  • Decline in growth

  • Leaves turn black within 3 years

  • Grass appears less vibrant

  • Grass begins to thin

  • Root rot

  • Grass takes longer to recover

Since the nature of the landscaping project can heavily influence the overall cost, it helps to understand what different types of landscaping projects cost on average. For example:

  • Plant a tree: $100–$2,000

  • Build a retaining wall: $3,250–$9,200

  • Reseed a lawn: $450–$1,700

  • Install a water fountain: $950–$4,800

  • Install a paver patio: $2,400–$7,000

  • Install a concrete walkway: $1,200–$2,400

  • Install a flower bed: $800–$3,000

  • Landscape lighting: $2,000–$6,000

It is possible to DIY complete hardscaping projects, but in most cases, hiring a professional is best to get the job done correctly. Hardscaping—including installing patios, decks, retaining walls, walkways, and water features—is challenging and time-consuming, so the money you spend on a professional is typically worth it. Not only will the quality be better, but you could avoid problems that come along with a lack of hardscaping experience, like drainage issues that can lead to costly foundation damage and leaks in your home.
