"Had basement windows installed. Great job, explained everything. The windows were the original ones. They covered the floors and the basement steps, cleaned up everything afterwards."

"We are currently happy with the basement waterproofing and remodeling that was completed! There were issues - most minor but we haven't anything to compare as this was the first-time having contractors complete basement work for us; and our home is almost 100 years old. They were flexible given unexpected issues that came about with the basement. The water proofing was done first and they did a great job. They were happy to review and resolve any remaining questions/concerns and/or issues. Jorge in the service dept. is professional, punctual and is a great representative and asset for this company."

"My basement floor was previously engineered hardwood and was ruined from water damage. Ronal had the floor removed and replaced it with tile and new quarter round to finish it off. The project was difficult: Ronal had to coordinate with other contractors in the house and I wasn't on site for any of it. His work was amazing. It exceeded my expectations and they were so fast!"

"The Proposal: Our salesman, Stephen, was very easy to talk to, responsive, and accommodating. When he didn't know the exact answer to something he was straightforward about it and made it a point to find out whatever it was. About the Professionals: The installers worked quickly and efficiently in oppressive heat, and finished their work in 1 day. Communicative and friendly. The Product: They appear to be good quality doors. Our only complaint is that our patio door came without its screen, or the key lock that we ordered to go with it. The screen on the front storm door became loose shortly after installation. This seems to be the manufacturer's error, and not AES's. A representative from the manufacturer (Alside) came to fix the issues after the fact. While it did take several weeks to get that sorted, it was still a positive experience working with the Alside rep; he was able to make a number of adjustments to the patio door that had it working even better than before, and repaired the storm door screen quickly. The Schedule: Our patio door was an odd size, so we had to wait an extra month or so, as their manufacturer (Alside) was backed up with orders. Props to our salesman Stephen for identifying straight away that we had a non-standard door size and accounted for it in his estimate, so we had no surprise costs. We also had to wait a fairly long time from contract signing to installation, due to their installer's busy summer schedule. AES was straightforward about this, though, and since we did not have a pressing deadline, we were ok with it. It was worth the wait. In summary, we have two new great-looking entrances on our townhouse, a sound investment. I would choose to work AES again because of their efficient installations and good communication, even if they are not the cheapest show in town. I've actually contracted them already to do work on a new property (kitchen and bathroom remodels), so I will be posting about that in the near future."

"While we have not done the project the team was helpful with getting things sorted out until we are ready to pull the trigger. Mike Walsh was particularly helpful and responsive. When we do the basement we will reach out to Dewar again to actually perform the work."

"I have been a real estate professional in Howard County for over 40 years, first as a realtor and then as an appraiser. In my career I must have seen conservatively over 4,000 houses. I have seen all kinds of renovations and updates to existing properties. I have seen workmanship at all levels, from DIY disasters to premier craftsmanship. I want to share with you an experience I have had with a basement renovation company called GloRem LLC (gloremllc.com). I was first involved with this company 10 years ago when the company was a new venture for the owner, Evgeny Chernousov (â Eugeneâ ). At that time, I found the company through Angieâ s List and took a chance on a young and eager contractor whose bid to remodel 3 bathrooms was competitive in the market. What a serendipitous decision that became. Eugene and his workmen, from tile experts to framers to electricians to plumbers to painters were true artisans, and Eugene was involved every step of the way. He made sure there was a minimum of construction dust and unnecessary clutter. His insistence on expert execution of every task was consistent with what I discovered to be his perfectionist personality trait. After enjoying his exceptional work on my bathrooms for a decade, it became time to both renovate my basement and add a bath. I was delighted to discover that Eugene and his company, GloRem LLC, had become a premier basement remodeling company. After asking him to see my basement and give me a bid, his pricing was still, despite his considerable success, competitive. I was delighted to discover that, a decade later, not only was his work ethic unchanged, but, in addition, Eugene has become a sophisticated version of his enthusiastic and talented younger self. His bid was detailed and easily understood with each expense described. His work, on my second encounter with him, was just as enjoyable as my firstâ ¦all work was completed ahead of schedule in impeccable fashion. I write all of this just to give any of you who are considering home renovations a heads up from a real estate professional who, in 40+ years, has truly â seen it allâ and is delighted that true quality and pride of workmanship still exists."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Anything having to do with the structure of your home, such as raising the ceiling, is usually the most expensive part of finishing a basement. Another project component that could be a surprisingly high expense is adding an exterior entrance.

The cost of a walkout basement can be anywhere from $5,000 to $35,000.

You should always use high-quality lumber for your framing in order to ensure it will last the test of time and resist moisture. Use 2-foot by 4-foot lumber that is pressure-treated for your framing.

There are several small, inexpensive upgrades you can make to upgrade your basement. Although you still need to adhere to building codes and obtain permits when necessary, you can complete small but mighty tasks like painting the masonry walls and installing entertainment devices to make the space more usable.

Living in a finished basement is acceptable, but only if the space has the proper points of egress and includes smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors to ensure the safety of the occupants. A good way to ensure your finished basement is suitable for use as living space is to get the basement finishing project properly permitted.

Yes, you can add a door to your basement—it might even be required, depending on building codes in your area and whether or not you’re using the basement as a bedroom. A basement contractor can give you some advice on installation and help you add a door to your basement.
