"Excellent work. They not only did an excellent job with cleaning but also painted the railing on my deck at a very reasonable price. Simply put, hire them"

"James was on time, professional, and honest. I purchased the roof maintenance package with the intention of him also diagnosing a leak that I had over our porch. James identified what he believes is the issue and offered some cost effective methods to fix it. He was honest and upfront about pricing."

"My deck is spotless and so is all the furniture. What typically takes me 2 days to do (a whole weekend!) they were able to knock out in around 6 hours. I was so happy I even bought the crew lunch. Highly recommended."

"The service was provided on the scheduled dates. The work was completed thoroughly; the house and porch look great! All items on the porch and deck were removed and replaced after the work was complete. We would definitely use this company again!"

"Denny promptly contacted us after the initial estimate request, and did the initial walk-through of our home. Goode Design fit the work to our (short fuse) schedule, and the crew showed up on time and ready to go. Karen and I were doing some landscape work, and trying to stay out of their way. They let us know quickly that it was our home, and they would adjust to us, not vice-versa. They finished on time, applying extra coats (without any prompting), and neatly prepping the remaining paint for us. throughout the entire process, they were as much extended family as they were workers. We definitely recommend them. Thank you, Denny!

"First off, plan extra time for rain...it rained a lot during this project.  Obviously, it is impossible to restore/stain a wet deck.

Earl and his son were fantastic.  I will definitely use his services again.  I had a deck that was an absolute mess...to the point where I thought it might make sense to tear it down and start over.  The top railings had shifted over time and were out place and many of the deck boards had huge cracks and gouges, some to the point where I think I could have gone through them if I jumped up and down.

We contacted Earl through Angie's List to come out for a quote.  He inspected the deck, let us know that the structure was sound, and that we could go many more years before considering tearing it down.  He said he could make it look like new and gave us suggestions regarding the colors that would look best with our siding/entrance to our house.  We decided to go with a darker grey on the floor boards with white on the railings.  The second color added significant painting work to the job and increased the price from $1,600 to $2,000 but was worth it.

I handed Earl a check for the first 50% and he got to the power washing within a couple of days.  There was no break in the rain for the next week, but Earl kept us in the loop regarding where we were in the queue and when we could expect to have the job worked on.  During a 1 day break in the rain he got out to our house and painted the white vertical railings and replaced the top of the railings .  For the next week it rained almost continuously.  On the next dry day Earl and his son came out and replaced many of the floor boards and stained a first coat on the base.  The next dry day, both Earl and his son were back and completed the job.

The deck looks fantastic!!!  From it's original poor condition, I couldn't imagine it would have looked so good when completed.

Earl and his son were extremely professional, hard working, and very personable.  The final product was beyond my expectations and I will definitely give Earl a call next time I need work completed.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Building a deck without a permit could lead to fines for both the homeowner and the contractor. The exact penalties will depend on your state and municipal building laws. You might also be required to remove the deck and apply for a permit before you can build another. While it might be tempting to skip the permit to save a few bucks, it’ll cost you much more if you’re caught.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

You typically don’t need a railing and handrails on a deck that’s less than 30 inches from the ground. However, consider adding them regardless. Railings provide additional safety for you and your guests who use your deck—plus, railings give the deck a more finished look than it would have without them.

A sunroom will add more value to your home than a deck, but with a much higher up-front cost. Depending on its construction and function, a sunroom may be counted as additional living space, while a deck is strictly an outdoor feature. Both will increase your home’s value, but the sunroom will have a much bigger effect.
