"Was having a potential home inspected for structural integrity. Spoke to Bob on the phone a few times. Since the home’s basement primarily consisted of a giant crawl space, I was told Don would do the job. Ultimately, the day before the scheduled inspection, I couldn’t get ahold of Don. Bob said Don was “feeling sick,” so the job was off. Frustrating, but a blessing in disguise because we ended up going with Colonial Restorations (the home was built in the 1800s). Colonial Restorations, LLC is the “go-to” for older home inspections and repairs. Tom was amazing (his son Brad is soon to take over the business)! They were both prompt, professional, and thorough. Very pleased with their work and thorough report/estimate. Colonial Restorations, LLC PO Box 868 Fiskdale, MA 01518 508-735-9900"

"Richard was extremely helpful providing a demonstration of his software and his approach to the process. He visited our space and took detailed measurements and put together very detailed, professional plans. We are using the plans to help us secure the proper town approvals to proceed with our project. He answered all of our questions and was incredibly responsive. I would recommend him to others - he's a great expert to work with!"

"I hired Chris at CJ Associates to produce an engineering design and drawing for a deck project that I'm building myself on a tight turnaround. Since I'd decided to add a 12-foot diameter gazebo to the deck, the town required a drawing from a professional structural engineer. I'm so glad I found Chris! He was an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish. Literally within an hour of submitting my request, we'd set up a time for him to come by two days later. He sent the first drawing to me a few days after that, and we iterated a couple times on the design. We brainstormed about different ideas and approaches, and I'm very thankful that he took the time to walk me through what he did and why he designed it that way. I'm an engineer as well (aerospace) and I love to understand the rationale for various design decisions. Plus, I've only built one other deck in my life (over 20 years ago) and it was great to be able to talk through parts of the structure I wasn't as confident in building. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with how collaborative the process went, since this was a small job. So I submitted the permit application and drawing, waited to hear back and... the town couldn't grant the permit without a full land survey ($2,000 and over 4 week delay) because they said the design might be encroaching on a 15-foot setback distance to the property line. In a panic, I asked Chris if there was anything else I could do. Even though he'd finished his part of this project, he was still invested in making it succeed. He told me about the process and what had worked in the past for him on other jobs. I was just about to throw in the towel and get the land survey when Chris convinced me to change the design to align it with the existing, grandfathered deck line. He changed the drawing quickly, I brought it to the town and... less than a week later I had my permit. Chris was a wonderful resource throughout this process. I look forward to working with him again on other projects and highly recommend CJ Associates!"

"After an unusual situation arose at my home, I was concerned about the possibility of structural damage caused by drilling and new construction at an adjacent lot. After receiving a recommendation for Veitas Engineers from a trusted source, I called and scheduled an appointment. I am so thankful that I did. I continue to be impressed with the amount of time that the two engineers spent at my house, closely inspecting the exterior and interior. Within days, I received a 16-page detailed report which included drawings, photographs, recommendations, and action items. I was so pleased when I saw that the action items were categorized as structural and non-structural, that is, that the engineers included items beyond my actual structural concerns. I used the report when working with a contractor to follow up on the recommendations and action items. The contractor was impressed with the quality, clarity, and scope of the report. I am so happy that I chose Veitas Engineers!"

"Phoenix Six started with a camp originally constructed in 1880, modified a hundred years late and then damaged by a fire. Arnold dealt witb 5 family members and converted our property into a lovely family owned year-round home with modern conveniences to be shared by five families. This was not an easy task and we are truly impressed with the results."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

You need to hire a structural engineer when building or modifying any component with a structural load in your home. Common situations where you would need a structural engineer include home inspections when buying or selling a home, investigating possible issues with your foundation, beams, load-bearing walls, or chimneys, breaking ground on a new home or structure on your property, and renovating an old part of your home that could threaten any structural integrity. Home additions and bump-outs also require an engineer.

Costs depend on material choices, labor, and the extent of structural modifications.

Yes, water damage can affect your walls' structural integrity. If the water or moisture sits on the walls for an extended period, it can weaken the drywall, plaster, wood framing, and other materials supporting the wall. That's why it's critical to dry out the area as soon as you notice it.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.
