Small jobs welcome

"they were reasonable in price, did an efficient job and cleaned up the job site. Had them do work before and went to them again. They did blown in insulation in a wall with a room that is always cold."

"Fabulous job! We area already see the difference with the insulation through Mass Save about 25%! Mark and his crew were very professional, courteous, and really nice guys. Garrett did a great job with estimating and made the process very easy and recommended additional measures to explore. I highly recommended Green Collar!"

"Once the weather cooperated and the team was able to do the work, it was done very quickly and it all looks great! Vista sent in different people with different specialties for each piece of the job. The only thing that didn't come out quite as well as we would have liked was the drywall repair on the ceiling -- if we look closely, we can see the seam, but it wouldn't be noticeable to others. The same person who did the ceiling drywall did the drywall where the sliding doors were and the wall turned out beautifully. Also, the door did not shut correctly after initial installation, but Vista sent someone out -- without hesitation -- to repair it within two weeks and it works perfectly now. The team cleaned everything up as they went, so we only had very few nails and scrap materials to pick up.

We've already recommended Vista to neighbors and friends. The owner takes pride in the work his team does and it was clear in his follow-up to the job.

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

"Home FaceLifters was very quick to respond. We had waited so long for another contractor to get back to us that we decided to go ahead and call someone else. They were here the next day to take a look at the basement. They got back to us fairly quickly with a quote and began working within the first couple of days. The crew was here most days at 8 am. They were very courteous and did a great job.  Joe was always available to answer any questions we had, either via phone, email, or in person. They worked pretty quickly and once all the inspections were done, they were able to complete the job. We needed a few light fixtures changed upstairs in the main part of the house and Joe and his crew offered to do it for us while they were here! We got the towel rods, toilet paper holder, etc....and they installed those for us in the new bathroom. Originally, they were not going to use a programmable thermostat, but I asked if they could put one in (I even offered to pay the extra), and they installed one free of charge. They built a big egress window to code with a block well and steps to get out, in case of emergency. It brings in so much more light too! The basement looks great. The painted black ceiling is spectacular....especially with all those lights. They also enclosed the electrical panel and water main, so we don't have to see them. They built a small closet around the sump pump as well. They built a drain to go from the egress window well directly into the pump and made a small hole in the wall (I asked them to) of the sump pump closet that just fits the hose from my dehumidifier, so it too can drain into the sump pump. We also asked if they could insulated the ceiling of the bathroom, as it's just below our bedroom, and they did that as well. They sealed everything up around the pipe openings and vented the new plumbing through our bedroom closet, out the attic and roof.  There was only one small fee above the original quote, and that was due to the fact that the electrician had to add another electrical box. We're very happy with everything!

"UPDATE 5/1/12: Subsequent to our inital Angies list review, we were contacted by John Angliss, owner of Carefree Energy Solutions regarding our review.  He was concerned that we had recieved such poor service from his team and indicated that he would work towards rectifying the situation. As of today, our window glass has been repaired finally and we are enjoying a "crack-free" experience.  I have updated our rating from "D" to "B" now that the problem window is no longer.

Just an FYI - John did confirm that Carefree Energy Solutions does contract with local companies to hire teams to do the installations.  The final folks that did come out to repair our window were quick and fairly professional.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carefree's quote was not the lowest we recieved, be based on their sales pitch (which was 2 hours each over two days), we were agreeable to pay the extra for "better quality products" which were proprietary to their company.  We were also guaranteed that the installers who would come to our home would be employees of Carefree Energy Solutions, which made us feel a bit more secure than having random contractors. Overall, we paid about $3,000 more than the lowest quote we recieved.Between signing the contract and getting the job done, they reset our install dates twice.  The third time they called, I refused to change as I was 8 months pregnant and wanted the job completed before baby arrived.  The actual installation process of the siding and windows went ok.  The only issue was that they ended up mismeasuring the siding originally, and once they realized they were short, they asked us to pay the material cost difference.  We refused and stood by the contract we signed.  They reluctantly agreed to absorb the cost.  With respect to the gutters, we had to remind Carefree that those were supposed to be redone as listed in our contract.  They did not argue and had someone comeby on the last day to complete the job. All in all, if this is where it had all ended, I probably would have rated the whole deal a "B"HOWEVER, The post-install process and service has been a NIGHTMARE.1) Leftover materials (which oddly included 2 boxes of siding) were left in our yard for weeks.  We had to call and email several times before they came and picked up the material.  They did not give us any concessions for the grass that was killed in the process.2) There were quite a few nails and cigarette butts left on our lawn and driveway once the installers left3) At the time of this install, the Federal Government was giving the energy tax credit.  We had to call CES several times before they sent us the appropriate proof of energy efficient windows/siding.  Ironically, the materials listed on the paperwork happen to be "Mercury Exellum" windows (THE SAME BRAND THAT WAS QUOTED BY THE OTHER CONTRACTOR WE HAD) and "Alside" Vinyl Siding (AGAIN, THE SAME BRAND THAT WAS QUOTED BY THE OTHER CONTRACTOR)3) Towards the end of the summer, one of the windows developed a stress crack in it.  All of the Windows have a lifetime warranty and so this window should be replaced at no cost to us under our warranty.  It took several months before they ordered a new window.  When it came in a gentleman called me to set up an installation.  I explained that the window hangs about 15 feet above the ground and was very heavy, so he would need two or three people + appropriate scaffolding to do the replacement.  He tried to convince me that he was very experienced and could do the job so we set up an appointment.  When he arrived at our home ALONE, he told me he could not do the job and told me to reschedule with Carefree.  I called CES AGAIN and explained what had happened.  They took another month before they sent out another pair of guys to do the replacement.  This time, the same guys who had installed the original window showed up.  When they unwrapped the replacement glass, they found that the glass had a minor chip on the edge (I could not see it) and decided not to install it..."because it would just cause another crack"  At this time, the guys told me that they didn't work for CES, but worked for Alside and had gotten the day off for this job.  Before leaving, they asked me where the nearest fishing spot was!!!.   It has been three years, and I have called and emailed Carefree's service department several times to get the window replaced.  NO SUCH LUCK. So we still have a picture window with a crack in it despite the lifetime warranty. We still have the front and sides of our home that require vinyl siding.  Had CES honored their committment and guarantees, they could have possibly had the siding job that we intend to have done this spring.  At this point, we're hitting the market to look for other siding professionals with access to the Alside siding products."

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can install drywall over plaster, but there are important factors to consider. While it can create a smooth, flat surface, it is often not the best approach. Installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall's thickness, which can cause issues with existing window and door frames that may no longer fit. You might also need to adjust power outlets to keep them accessible. A better, though more expensive, option is to remove the old plaster and lath entirely before installing new drywall. Drywalling directly over plaster seals in the old material, and if any problems arise later, you will need to remove both layers down to the structural beams for repairs. Given the potential complications, this job is best handled by professionals.

A 50-pound mirror can be hung on drywall, but only if it has the support of strong hardware. Ideally, you can find the studs behind the drywall and attach the mirror to them; this will give your mirror better stability. Otherwise, confirm that you are using anchors appropriate to the weight of the mirrors. Another technique is to use French cleats—two pieces of wood that fit together, with one piece attached to the wall and the other to the mirror. This allows the weight to be distributed over a wider area.

You should always hang drywall from the top down. Starting at the top makes it easier to create a straight, tight line between the ceiling and the wall. Any gaps that occur will be at the bottom, where they are easier to manage. You can either cut the bottom piece of drywall to fit the remaining space or cover the gap with baseboard trim. Additionally, starting at the top is physically easier, as you won't have to fit the top sheet into a tight space between the lower sheet and the ceiling, or try to balance the upper sheets on the lower ones while securing them.

Brick and stucco are a lot more different. You must use picture hanging clips designed for brick walls, or use a plaster rail system with adjustable hooks. Any other type of hanging hardware will cause damage to the bricks behind. You won’t be able to really use nails, either, because they’re not strong enough to go into the bricks.

Professionals mount TVs using specialized tools and knowledge of different wall materials, ensuring safe support.
