Not all homes are suited for solar panel systems. Older roofs or those in poor condition may need repairs or replacement before solar panels can be installed. Some other factors to consider are the amount of sunlight your roof receives, the roof’s orientation and pitch, and any shading from nearby trees or buildings.

It’s possible to install solar on a tar and gravel roof, but it’s far from the best roofing material for solar. Solar installations require roof penetrations, and although your solar installer will seal the holes, they still increase the risk of roof leaks. Flat roofs are already more likely to leak than sloped roofs, and adding solar will only make leaks more likely.
