"Michael and his crew are very professional. Michael came out and gave me an estimate (which was final price) and was very through on what would be included in price. He seemed to be very accommodating as far as work that needed to be completed. I got quite a few estimates, but chose to hire MJ Masonry even though they were not the least expensive due to the way Michael carried himself. Crew worked very hard for 6 days to complete a retaining wall 60' long by 6' high. They were clean and courteous. The wall came out so nice I wish it weren't on the backside of property where no one can see. I would definitely hire again and highly recommend MJ Masonry."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Protect your family during masonry work by keeping children and pets indoors. Older homes in MA contain hazardous lead and silica dust, making strict separation essential. Set up temporary fencing to block off work zones in small urban yards. Schedule messy grinding or demolition during school hours. Relocate outdoor play areas entirely until the job finishes to ensure your family avoids harmful dust and debris.

Helpful?

Prioritize safety during masonry work by hiring a licensed contractor for any structural repairs or chimney rebuilds. Secure all necessary building permits before starting. Schedule your project carefully, as local building codes prohibit cold-weather work below 40 degrees. Secure scaffolding against high winds off the Merrimack River. Avoid spring foundation repairs in flood-prone neighborhoods to prevent ground saturation from destabilizing your entire Lowell property.

Helpful?

Address minor masonry work by scrubbing away white salt deposits with water and a stiff brush. Document any hairline cracks under a quarter inch through the winter months. Schedule your mortar patching between May and October to avoid Lowell freeze-thaw cycles ruining your repairs. Hire a local professional for cracks wider than a quarter inch or for pre-1940 homes, since modern cement ruins historic lime-based mortar.

Helpful?

Your home is a perfect candidate for masonry work if it features original brick from the nineteenth-century industrial boom. Look for visible spalling or flaking brick after a harsh Lowell winter. Check exterior walls for white mineral deposits, especially on north-facing sides. Inspect your foundation for stair-step cracking in the mortar joints, which occurs in local clay soils due to seasonal frost heave.

Helpful?

Chimneys require frequent masonry work due to heavy freeze-thaw cycles damaging soft historic brick. Inspect your foundation walls, as expanding clay soils and high groundwater place immense stress on older rubble stone. Check your front stoops and entry steps for damage caused by winter road salt. Finally, monitor your exterior brick walls and retaining walls for deteriorating mortar joints that require professional repointing across Massachusetts.
