"I needed to replace the front steps because they were pulling away from the foundation. I received several quotes and Republic Masonry (Henry) came in with a budget friendly price. Henry and his co-worker were professional and very detail oriented and cleaned up when the job was complete. The stairs look wonderful! I would highly recommend Republic Masonry (Henry) for all your cement projects. Kathy Faye"

"Michael and his crew are very professional. Michael came out and gave me an estimate (which was final price) and was very through on what would be included in price. He seemed to be very accommodating as far as work that needed to be completed. I got quite a few estimates, but chose to hire MJ Masonry even though they were not the least expensive due to the way Michael carried himself. Crew worked very hard for 6 days to complete a retaining wall 60' long by 6' high. They were clean and courteous. The wall came out so nice I wish it weren't on the backside of property where no one can see. I would definitely hire again and highly recommend MJ Masonry."

Masonry FAQs, answered by experts

Inspect your property every spring after the harsh Massachusetts winter. Schedule masonry work immediately if you notice heavy ice accumulation damage from a nor'easter or see water entering your basement during snowmelt. Many Chelmsford homes built between 1950 and 1980 currently require chimney or foundation repointing. Since mortar joints last 25 to 30 years in this climate, older properties need prompt attention to prevent structural deterioration.

Helpful?

Keep children and pets away from active masonry work areas to prevent exposure to dangerous silica dust and toxic wet mortar. Many older Chelmsford homes contain lead-based paint or mortar, making proper containment essential. Restrict access to your yard during excavation, as the rocky local soil creates hazardous drop-offs and unstable dirt piles. Install secure fencing around the site to protect your family throughout the entire renovation process.

Helpful?

When hiring for masonry work, verify that your local professional holds the required state registrations and insurance. Massachusetts law mandates workers' compensation coverage for contractors with employees. Because Chelmsford experiences a humid continental climate with harsh freeze-thaw cycles, hire a certified specialist who understands proper mortar selection for New England winters. Ensure your contractor secures all necessary permits for structural projects like foundation repairs or tall retaining walls before beginning construction.

Helpful?

Standard masonry work takes one to ten days to complete, depending on the project size. A chimney repointing takes one to three days, while rebuilding a retaining wall requires up to ten days. You must account for local permit processing times before starting. Additionally, Massachusetts humidity extends mortar cure times, requiring 24 to 72 hours of drying before the structure can safely bear weight or face freezing temperatures.

Helpful?

Address crumbling mortar and spalling bricks immediately, as freezing water expands and rapidly accelerates structural failure. In Chelmsford, stair-step cracks in your foundation indicate dangerous soil settlement. Watch for efflorescence, which looks like white salt deposits, as it signals chronic moisture damage. A cracked chimney crown or a leaning retaining wall requires immediate masonry work to prevent sudden collapse, fire risks, or severe property damage during the spring thaw.
