"Al was fantastic! He clearly explained that my fireplace was shutting off as a safety feature due to low oxygen levels. He also reassembled the logs in the firebox and showed me the proper way to start and stop the fireplace. Highly recommend his service!"

"We hired Lowes through Angie's List $299. special to clean our ducts and chimney sweep. Apologizes for not remembering the technicians name.  I called the night before ( after 5pm) to cancel due to a problem that arose but  it was  later corrected. He called the morning of scheduled appt. saying he got the message and it was ok to  cancel and reschedule. I told him what had occurred so if possible I'd keep my appt. He agreed and drove to Westfield from Boston. Upon arrival he was polite, profession and with a smile  showed me  where he had to cut the metal in the basement. he He explained the job then I left him alone to work. He started upstairs and ended by doing the chimney. We've never had ducts cleaned so I had no idea what to look for but we have had a chimney sweep. He was here between 2-3 hrs and constantly worked. From lack of knowledge of air duct cleaning I'd say he did the job hired to do,  although it seems he missed a couple.  As far as the chimney, I didn't watch him but he had all tools out and seemed content working. He did leave the flue open but since we had so much wind this past weekend we noticed the sound and closed it. When he left he told me to change my vent the following day. I did and it was filthy. I guess that means a job well done as the filter was less than a year old. I have no complaints and trust it was done correctly."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should seal and cap an unused chimney to protect it from damage. Sealing the structure helps prevent moisture damage, which can lead to issues like cracks, spalling, efflorescence, and damaged mortar joints. Capping the chimney is also crucial to prevent blockages, damage from invasive critters, and downdrafts, while still allowing for proper air ventilation to manage moisture. For the best results, consult a chimney professional to select the right type of chimney or flue cap for your home. It's also wise to continue with annual chimney inspections to maintain the structure's integrity.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), the leading cause of house fires is cooking accidents, followed by fires started by heating equipment. Electrical issues are the third most common cause of house fires. The best way to keep your home protected is to use caution when cooking and never leave a stove or oven unattended while in use. You can also keep up with chimney cleaning and avoid using space heaters to reduce the risk.

You can install a range hood and use the vent to protect your kitchen cabinets from heat and steam from the stovetop. For added heat protection, homeowners can install metal heat shields to exposed sections of the cabinets. It is also essential to keep cabinet surfaces clean by removing any grease buildup that can cause a fire.

The most common sign of a carbon monoxide leak is the visible black soot marks on the walls near your wood stove. An excess accumulation of smoke in other rooms of your home could also indicate that your wood burning stove is leaking carbon monoxide. If you notice either of these signs or are still unsure, it’s best to leave the premises and contact your fire department to check your home’s levels.

No, not all chimneys need a damper. However, most chimneys do, especially in newer homes. Most gas-burning fireplaces cannot function safely without a damper. Only some older wood-burning fireplaces can function safely without one. A chimney without a damper is essentially just an open hole in the roof of your home.
