The quality of the work is excellent, and the new roof looks great. They kept the work area clean and communicated well throughout the process. "I worked with RB Skimcoat Plastering & Drywall in November 2023 and highly recommend them. Randy was wonderful to work with - he communicated very well and often before and during the process, always kind and courteous, and answered my questions in a very timely manner with a lot of helpful information. My old horse hair plaster walls had been heavily textured over. Our original plan was for Randy and his team to overly the walls with drywall, however, we decided to change plans when it became clear that the end result wouldn't be what I was looking for. Randy did not hesitate and changed plans easily - they ended up skim coat plastering over my walls and giving them a perfectly smooth surface/finish! I still can't believe it! They also took down my old drop tile ceiling and installed a beautiful drywall ceiling. I am beyond happy with the end result and plan to work with Randy and his team again for future projects."

"Vanildo was awesome and did a great job painting our renovated mudroom and basement playroom to make both rooms seem brand new. He is very responsive and professional and has a very strong attention to detail. We will definitely hire him again to help with other rooms in our house!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, a fan can help drywall mud dry faster by improving air circulation and reducing humidity in the room. Drywall mud dries through evaporation, so increasing airflow speeds up this process. However, you should position the fan to blow across the room rather than directly on the wet mud. This helps prevent drying too quickly, which can cause cracking. You should also use a dehumidifier if high humidity is an issue.

You should always hang drywall from the top down. Starting at the top makes it easier to create a straight, tight line between the ceiling and the wall. Any gaps that occur will be at the bottom, where they are easier to manage. You can either cut the bottom piece of drywall to fit the remaining space or cover the gap with baseboard trim. Additionally, starting at the top is physically easier, as you won't have to fit the top sheet into a tight space between the lower sheet and the ceiling, or try to balance the upper sheets on the lower ones while securing them.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

You can put drywall mud over paint to even out the surface or entirely resurface it. Sand the surface with 280-grit sandpaper, vacuum the debris and dust with a shop vac, and clean it with a slightly damp cloth. Allow the surface to dry. Apply drywall primer, especially if you’re skim-coating an entire wall. Apply the right type of drywall mud over the surface and smooth it with a trowel. Allow the layer to cure fully, then sand it before applying another layer or painting it.

The best tool for cutting a hole in drywall is a drywall saw. Its serrated blade and ergonomic design make it efficient for both straight cuts and more intricate shapes, ensuring clean and precise results in various drywall cutting applications.
