"Hugh's Energy is a quality company and it starts at the top with owner-President, Tom Dromgoole. Tom made a site visit to my home to discuss details of the insulation including the process, timing, and outcomes; he answered all of my questions. He also came the day of the insulation to check on how things were going. His crew, led by Parris, was excellent - knowledgeable, efficient and clean. If you are considering insulating your home, just call this company and save yourself time."

"As was noted above, original project seemed very straightforward and indeed repairs to the garage have not involved any unforseen issues.  The basement proved to be another story - once we removed all of the ceiling plaster and wooden studs, it became clear that an entire section of the sill had rotted through in its entirety and would require replacement.  No small task for a circa 1920's era home with a solid brick exterior facade.  Alex exercised great care in devising a solution for how to properly raise this section of the house using three seperate jacks along a custom temporary frame installation.  His primary focus was on ensuring that everything maintained proper support throughout this repair, as any mistakes could compromise the steam radiator piping, as well as the exterior masonry.  Installation materials were top notch - he replaced the sill with a new 10' section of pressure treated wood, into which he bolted on a span of LVL that is further anchored by the foundation wall on one side, and a cast iron beam that runs through the center of my basement ceiling on the other.  From here we resealed all of the connecting joists and then filled in the small space that exists between the sill and the exterior vapor guard/Tyvek with foam insulation to improve the overall efficiency.
With this stage of the repair complete, we next turned our attention toward removing an old section of cast iron piping that ran out through the brick facade and had at one point been used to direct rain water down into the sewer system.  There had been a moisture issue along this section of foundation wall and once we removed the pipe we discovered that a gap existed which would require additional sealing.  Here again, Alex proposed a very thoughtful solution to repair and completely seal off the exterior so that water could no longer seep through.
In light of how the project had progressed to this point and with the foundation now repaired and structural issues remedied, I decided to expand the scope of work yet again to include complete re-framing and drywall installation of the affected basement walls and ceiling.  This stage is nearly complete and looks terrific.
Couple of points worth mentioning:
First, you can count on this company to prepar a fair and comprehensive proposal for any work you may be considering.  Their pricing is reasonable and the technical expertise and level of service is outstanding.
Second, Alex is very straightforward with regards to his assessment of what work needs to be done, and the best way to do it.  There are always opportunities for upselling, but he is genuinely not interested in selling you something you don't need.  Based on my experience, this company's top priority is on doing any job (big or small) to the best of their ability without compromise.  When we first started this particular project, it began as a much smaller endeavor and there was no promise of expansion.  I chose to award additional business as a direct result of the work they were doing, and the way they were treating me.

"Working with Pro Home Services was one of the best experiences we have ever had with a contractor.
When we decided to replace our siding with the Hardie board, we interviewed and got estimates from all four preferred James Hardie remodelers in the greater Boston area.  Pro Home Services was the last contractor we interviewed.   We hired Pro Home after meeting with Brad, the business manager and Eric, the owner.
Pro Home?s customer service went above and beyond comparing with the other three companies.  For the estimates,
two companies gave us hand-written quotes right at our house during the first visit and these quotes were the highest.
The other company emailed us the estimates over 10 days later than the promised date.
Brad made the effort to drop by our house; hand delivered the professionally written estimate, explained to us all details and patiently answered all of our questions.  We were very impressed with his knowledge and down-to-earth approach to our questions and needs.  In addition to siding replacement, we also wanted to replace the roof, gutter, kitchen window and sliding patio door.  I was very glad that I listened to Brad while I was trying to make decisions about which products to choose.   The window and door that he suggested turned out to be much better value and fit in the house perfectly then the more expensive products that I had in mind originally.
I am very particular about the color of the house and I had a hard time picking the right color for the Hardie Plank.  Eric has been very patient, very understanding and very helpful with my moments of indecision.  When I tried to work out the color choice with the other contractors, one contractor told me to go to Home Depot and buy sample paint myself, and another contractor just totally ignored my concerns.  In order to help us choosing the best color, Eric sample painted areas in the back of the house with the top colors of my choice.   I really appreciated Pro Home doing this, since the painted color on the house looks quite different from the color on the computer screen or the catalog.  Pro Home really helped me choosing the right color!
The entire Pro Home crew was very polite, efficient, easy to work with and respectful of our home.  It was a pleasure to have them around.  They paid great attention to details and the workmanship was superb.  In spite of bitterly cold weather in New England winter, they have been working hard and remained pleasant from start to finish.
Also, very importantly, the communication was great throughout the entire project.  Once I had a concern with the
ongoing roof install and called Eric.  He showed up at my house within an hour and resolved the issue quickly.  The issue turned out mostly due to my lack of knowledge about roofing.  When we weren?t home, Eric would email or text us with photo snap shots of their progress.  The crew would always notify us if they had a question or encounter a potential issue.
It was very reassuring that Pro Home made a strong commitment to quality and they took their work very seriously.  The crew cleaned up very neatly every day and the neighbors never had any issues.
They finished our punch list items efficiently.  The finished project is amazing!  Our house has been magically transformed.  The quality of work speaks for itself.  We continue to get compliments from neighbors and total strangers.  We greatly appreciate Eric, Brad, Sargio (the foreman), Eric?s father and all the rest of the Pro Home team for their professionalism,
responsiveness, and willingness to go the extra mile for their customers.  We would highly recommend Pro Home for any
James Hardie siding, roofing, window and door replacement projects!

This is probably not your roof:
But, if your roof has damaged flashing, missing shingles, curling, blistering, buckling, rotting and algae growth (which appears as dark or greenish stains), you probably need a new roof.
If you’re roofer doesn’t talk about these, you’re talking to the wrong guy:

"My overall experience was that there was very poor communication. Instructions even when repeated, were not followed. The project went 15% over the original quote of $16,177 and took over 2 months, instead of 4-5 weeks. The subcontractors(except for the plumbers)were sub par. The was damage to my house because on several occasions the workers took no action to protect the surrounding area. They used sheet rock instead blueboard, did not want to remove the original insulation, tried to tile over the original floor. Their knowledge of basic plumbing was also an issue-not knowing what a flange is on a tub. Shelves were roughed before I specified the size/placement for them. One small wall was repaired 4 times before reaching a somewhat acceptable condition. SCSI's estimate was inaccurate because they were unable to determine the needs for plumbing. Additional work was performed without providing and estimate first and invoices were not itemized and often incorrect."

"-The team at Vista Home inprovement are top-notch, true professionals!
-Estimates were done with photo's provided!
-They coordinated with the tenant in the home.
-Got the job done when they said they would.
-Provided solid advice/guidance and excellent service!
-Quality product!!
Just so you know, with 34 years of military service, and I am still in, I have a high level of expectation without excuses and I don't give recommendations too often!! But this is worth the time!
I live out of town and not being there to oversee the project and actualy speak with Brian in person was a challenge for me because as with so many contractors they say one thing and then never show, etc.  Brian not only showed up, he provided me the estimates I needed and then went back  photo's for my insurance company.  After Brian provided the first estimate the insurance company wanted another estimate due to the type of shingle on the roof, as they are required to replace the current material with as close as possible to the original type materials.   Brian, provided a second estimate with the original type material.    The second material was not as good as the first and still put the the better GAF roofing shingle on the house due to it's superior quality and warranty    (50year warranty!- ok I'll be dead by then, but heck the next owner will be in good shape!)
-Brian Rudd is a true professional and so is his team.  Honestly, don't even bother going to anyone else, because  you won't find better service and price!  Brian, Kim, Ron, thank you all for the service you provided!!
I will be calling you guys in the future for other outside work!  Thanks again!

"Called several contractors and was subsequently referred to Morgan. He immediately came over and provided an estimate. Work went exactly as he promised, including timeliness, progress, costs, and overall professionalism. The insulation job was horrible and messy and probably the type of job no contractor wants if they can avoid it but they completed it with no complaints and my house is incredibly warmer as a result which is exactly what I hoped for. My new deck is beautiful, he even suggested copper caps for the posts which made the inexpensive option of pressure-treated wood I opted for look more upscale. Morgan explained all aspects of the project to me and made several functional suggestions for additional work I will be proceeding with vs. the aesthetic work I had in mind right now. Being very reticent to hire a contractor for any extensive work I can say I am very very pleased and would recommend him unequivocally."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

In addition to adding insulation to your attic, you may want to add a radiant barrier. A radiant barrier works by using reflective material, such as foil, on the attic floor. As heat penetrates the roof and enters the attic, the radiant barrier reflects the heat upward and back through the roof. If you receive a lot of direct sunlight on the roof, using both a radiant barrier and insulation in your attic can provide significant benefits.

Unfaced wall insulation is easier to cut and install, making it the better choice for a DIY project. It’s also more affordable. But if it’s unfaced, you’ll likely need to add a vapor barrier to reach your desired R-value and efficiency, as it doesn’t offer any moisture barrier.

Faced insulation uses paper or foil to create a built-in barrier and doesn’t require an extra step. It’s also more fire-resistant and safe. But it’s quite a bit more expensive and a little bit harder to work with as a DIYer.

Actually, condensation can mean that your windows are more energy efficient because the seal keeps cold air out and warm air in. In some cases, windows with poor seals can lead to more condensation, but they may allow the cold and warm air to mix and reduce condensation. If you’re worried about whether or not your windows are properly insulated, have a pro assess them.

Insulating a stone house is an expensive and involved process because it requires building a double-walled house. The walls don’t need to be the same thickness, but they both need to be thick enough to handle any structural demands and meet fire and safety standards. The insulation (usually foam or fiberglass) is then installed between the two stone walls.

Insulating your ducts offers several benefits, including:

  • Improved energy efficiency: Duct insulation prevents energy losses, reducing heating and cooling costs.

  • Cost savings: Lower energy bills make insulation a cost-effective investment.

  • Environmental benefits: Enhanced efficiency reduces your carbon footprint.

  • Consistent comfort: Insulated ducts help maintain a stable indoor temperature.

  • Better indoor air quality: Reduced allergens and pollutants improve air quality.
