"My wife and I hired Essential Painting company to paint the exterior of our house and stain our deck. We chose them after reviewing quotes from 5 companies total. They were very competitively priced and we are extremely happy with the color and quality of our home. The house had some rot on the side, they were able to provide in house carpentry to the shingles and a window frame, something not all the other companies even offered. They were quick and professional, also they were not overbooked like some other painting companies we looked at. In the end, Essential Painting was the company we found that met all our expectations and the results were fantastic. I would definitely use them again."

"Perfect. This was not a typical job. Normally painters paint flat surfaces. This job was to paint (stain) 62 6-sided boards installed as a pergola. I tried to do it myself but only did 4 boards before I gave up and called Target Painting. (Another company refused the job.) Gene was great, as well as all the crew. At one point, one of the painters went up on the roof to monitor the progress and inspect the hard-to-reach places. Everything was great, including the cleanup."

"Erivan and his team were super responsive and responsible and great to work with. They did really high quality work for us, and I loved the result. They have been painting for years, and were referred to me from a friend who had them paint his historic Somerville home with many details. The team was always on time, and they were great problem solvers when things inevitably came up (we ran out of paint, for example). I was also impressed that they painted all the trim perfectly without painters tape :) Their work included doing some light spackling of wall cracks, and removal of shades before they started. Finally, they were super fast!"

"The above work was long overdue. Had not painted the house in 12 years. Deck had not been stained in 7 years. Same with gutters. The team -- Mauri, Rafael, and Anderson -- did an excellent job. They worked hard, work was done with great precision. On top of all this, they're all great guys, very easy-going. Pricing was reasonable -- well worth the job(s) done. I will definitely hire them for future work."

"They just finished a job for me today (7/31/19). Power washed, scraped and painted my entire house, two decks and a shed and did it all in 3 and a half days. My house looks like a new house after they finished, they did a phenomenal job ! The guys were very friendly, professional and kept the work area clean daily. Can't say enough good things about them and their prices are very reasonable."

Small jobs welcome

"Great experience with Shay and SBL Painting. They painted 90% of the interior of our new home - walls, ceiling, stairways, trim, fireplace mantle. Everything turned out great and they finished way ahead of schedule. I kept adding to the project and they were able to not only accommodate, but do so with great quality and attitude. SBL will be the first company I call for my next painting project."

"I highly recommend Urbano Painting. They applied solid stain to the cedar siding and trim of our two-story colonial and performed some repair and replacement carpentry - at a price that was lower than all but one of the quotes I received. All of their work was impeccable. Jocimar and his whole team are a pleasure to deal with and went the extra mile to ensure our complete satisfaction. Everything was done with a high degree of professionalism, from prep work to staining to daily cleanup. The whole experience exceeded my expectations, and I hope to hire them again for interior painting."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

You’ll want to avoid excessively hot or humid conditions, so it’s best to apply your stain in late spring to early fall. It's also important to watch the weather forecast and aim for days when there isn’t rain expected for at least three days. For new decks, allow the wood to season beforehand for at least four to eight weeks.

No, it is not okay to paint over rotted wood. Painting over rotted wood will not address the underlying issue and can trap moisture, leading to further decay. Properly addressing the rotted wood by removing and replacing or repairing the damaged areas is necessary before you can even consider painting.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

Oxygen bleach uses hydrogen peroxide as a base and won’t harm wood when using it as a cleaner. On the other hand, chlorine bleach breaks down wood at the cellular level and causes irreversible harm. Although you may not see immediate damage to wood after exposing it to chlorine bleach, its strength and integrity are now compromised.
