"Two man crew. On-time. Assessed area, brought in back hoe, very organized, dug hole, and removed tank. Removed all hose lines in the house where connections were. Filled in holes, cleared area, very professional and through. We purchased top soil and reseeded lawn after C2G left."

"Reached out to Outdoor X after getting a couple of other quotes for General Landscaping. Starling was prompt in returning my call and was clear about the Who/What/When and of course the Price. Very reasonable compared to some of the other Quotes/Terms that I was encountering. I gave Starling the go ahead for the work done. Was scheduled for 6/3/2024, I got up, went to work, came home after 4:30PM to a property I didn't recognize. Immaculate work, cleaned up the property. Definitely will be using Outdoor X for any future landscaping projects. Thank You Starling & the Crew of Outdoor X"

"I called for a fall cleanup during probably their busiest time and they gave me a very reasonable quote within hours and scheduled an appointment in a matter of a couple of days. The crew was hard-working, polite, careful with regard to property and respectful of the neighbors. When they finished, I barely recognized my yard! It was completely cleaned of fallen leaves, debris and they even mowed my lawn!! I was so pleased I canâ  t wait to book them for my spring cleanup."

"They responded to my request to look at my project immediately, and came to my house the same day to look at the job. They were able to do my project within 2 days, after I spoke to him. it wasnâ  t a huge project but it was urgent because I had water leaking into my basement from the rain. They Excavated around a cinderblock foundation, put on waterproofing on the cinderblock in the same day, they came back the next morning (Christmas Eve!) And backfilled the dirt and finished in a couple hours. They cleaned up everything beautifully when they were done. They did a Great job, and I couldnâ  t be happier with him. I well definitely use them again, and I would highly recommend them!"

"Rony and his team are fantastic. They did a complete overhaul of my lawn from soil to sod, trimmed trees and added hardscape. It looks fantastic. Price was reasonable. Crews were great. Work was done FAST. And they accommodated my last minute changes. These days, every home service pro is super busy and stretched thin. I am so glad I was patient and waited for Rony and his team."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Depth is not a qualifying component of evacuation. Any human-made cut, cavity, or depression in the earth’s surface is considered excavation. The hole from excavation can be any size, shape, or depth. Excavation is used to create foundations, reservoirs, drainage ditches, and roads. Long, narrow excavations are called trenches and are often used for underground utilities.

The average cost of excavation is approximately $3,200, with typical projects ranging from $500 to $15,000. Depending on the contractor, you may be charged between $50 and $200 per cubic yard or an hourly rate of $40 to $180 for an excavation specialist. The total cost is influenced by several factors, including the project size, the amount of soil to be removed, and the soil's condition. Hard soil, tree roots, or excessive rocks and clay can increase the price, potentially adding $200 to $1,200 to the final bill. Other factors that can drive up costs include the presence of nearby structures that complicate the work or tight spaces that require manual excavation instead of heavy machinery.

Hardscaping often requires preparation of the ground in the area where the feature is being installed. This can include digging, compacting, and leveling the soil, ensuring adequate drainage, and removing any existing plants. The extent of preparation needed will depend on the type and size of the hardscaping feature being installed.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.
