"Jacob from Your Neighborhood Locksmith was great with communication. He was prompt to contact me and schedule service. He communicated frequently to provide updates on his ETA. He arrived on time and completed the initial project within an hour and without damaging the door. He was courteous, efficient and flexible, willingly fixing another lock for me when asked. Would definitely work with Jacob from Your Neighborhood Locksmith again."

"Bob Phalan has been our go-to handyman for the past 3-4 years. First of all, he is the rare contractor/workman who communicates and shows up when he says he will, often confirming the night before or calling when he’s on his way. We greatly appreciate his reliability. Over the years, Bob has done such a variety of projects for us that I can’t enumerate them all; but in the past year he has done painting, roof repair, carpentry, power washing, gutter cleaning and more. Bob is very knowledgeable about materials, tools and processes. No matter what the project is, Bob always seems to have the right tools for the job. He’s very organized and cleans up the work area when he’s done. I think his skills and workmanship are outstanding and I highly recommend him."

"Walter and Glen at Protect Your Home Group with ADT are the best people to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

"I hired TJ for a series of repair and replacement jobs - door replacements, installation of medicine cabinets and lighting. TJ did an excellent job and I would absolutely hire him again. He was methodical, detailed, careful and took pride in his work. Additionally, he was extremely respectful and cleaned up each day after a long day of working. I highly recommend TJ Method."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

When the temps drop, sometimes you need to thaw a lock to regain access. Options include warming the key with warm water, applying a de-icing spray, or using a hair dryer on low heat. Avoid using boiling water to prevent damage. To prevent future freezing, consider installing a cover or shield over the lock to keep water and ice out. Remember to be patient and gentle during thawing to avoid damaging the lock or key. If all else fails, consult a professional locksmith.

Smart door locks are safe to use and are usually considered safer than traditional locks with keys. While all electronic devices can be hacked, that doesn’t happen nearly as frequently in real life as people may think. You can also invest in multiple locks of different types for enhanced security so you don’t rely solely on one smart lock.

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

The good news is that, yes, you can change locks yourself. Many people find it’s an easy DIY project that requires few tools and not much expense (depending on which lock you’re installing). If you have trouble with any part of an installation, you can always call a locksmith to help finish installing them.

Lock picking is a relatively subtle method of unauthorized access, making it hard to detect. But there are telltale signs to look for. First, look for scratches or tool marks around the keyhole or the lock's surface. Also, check for loose or misaligned components, like a wonky strike plate, which could indicate tampering. Consulting a locksmith or security professional for an assessment can provide valuable insights, too. Investing in high-quality locks and considering additional security measures, like security cameras, can help deter potential intruders and enhance your overall safety.
