"I was buying a new house, the home inspector had some questions about the attic joists and suggested I have a professional take a look at them. I needed it done quickly and I called three contractors. Matt from MMP was the only one that called me back the same day and agreed to come look at them the next day. He showed up on time, suggested a remedy and gave me an estimate. After buying the house I had him complete the work. It was done as promised in a very tight and dirty attic space, they cleaned up before leaving. I also chose Matt to replace my roof after getting three estimates. The crew did the complete job, chimney flashing, ice and water shield, small roof repair and venting channels in the attic. Clean up was great, no mess left in the yard. He was not the lowest estimate but all the work was done without any additional charges. I was very pleased with the results."

Customers say: Quick response

"We interviewed 3 contractors for our kitchen remodel when I finally did an google search for local contractors in my area. I read a review of Jack from Strong Builders that was so impactful, it actually brought me to tears. We met with Jack and could not have be happier with our decision. Jack is a rare find these days. He is trust worthy, reliable and very skilled at what he does. Jack showed up day one of the project, parked his trailer and was there 6 days a week, 8-10 hrs a day! He is organized, methodical and keeps a clean job site. He was very honest about the expectations of the project, when minor issues arose, they were handled and addressed with ease. Jack works diligently to see the project through to completion with his goal of “no callbacks”. Strong Builders, one guy, one project at a time. I would recommend him over and over!"

Small jobs welcome

"The attention to detail and workmanship was superb. This was a 3 phase repair/replacement project that took about a month to complete and involved very detailed exterior carpentry and painting. We were so impressed with the level of customer service that we've awarded D & D Bros. Painting with two additional projects. They are friendly, reliable, and competitive. But the best is they treated our home as if it was their own."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Installing an ornamental or decorative porch column takes around three to five hours. Structural columns take longer because your pro has to install a jack to hold up the roof while switching the column out. If there's any structural damage, it can add several days to the timeline to repair the damage.

For maximum stability, install grab bars on wall studs, as this will adequately support the weight. However, if you don't have access to studs, you can get by with wall anchors. If opting for the latter, choose specialty hollow wall anchors.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.
