Higgins Energy Alternatives is one of the oldest and largest fireplace shops in the United States. A family owned and operated business started in 1975 by Ron & Sue Higgins, we originally opened as an antique store which diversified into wood stoves during the energy crisis of 1979. Over the years, we have grown along with our product line, expanding several times from our original barn on Summer Street to our present location at 140 Worcester Road (Rte 122) in Barre, Massachusetts. From sales to service, our staff has literally decades of experience in every aspect of self-reliant home heating, whether your choice is wood, coal, gas or wood pellets. Several of our employees have been with us for over 20 years. Although we have grown and expanded in order to better service our customers, we remain located in a small town with a friendly country atmosphere, where our top priority is customer goodwill and satisfaction. At Higgins Energy, you can rely upon our experience and reputation, along with our commitment to professional associations and the long history of industry awards and accolades which we have earned over the years. We hope that you will give us the opportunity to earn your trust.

"It was fantastic. They responded to my emails promptly. They came when they were scheduled. And the quality of their work was superb. Everything was spotless - not an ash anywhere, not one dirty footprint to be found. They moved stuff that was in the way and placed it NEATLY out of the way. The pellet stoves were immaculate. I can't see inside my chimneys, but from the looks of everything else, I'm 100% confident that they did an excellent job in there too. I'd hire them again in a heartbeat!"

Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

Some cities or states may require you to have an earthquake gas shut-off valve. Your insurance provider may also have requirements for installing this valve. Even if you don’t have to have one by law, it’s wise to have a natural gas plumber install one anyway. These devices can be lifesaving and prevent fires or explosions in the event of a gas leak.

The best way to reset this valve is to contact your utility provider to do so safely. If the pipes are damaged and you reset the valve anyway, it could lead to a gas leak. It’s important to call in a pro as soon as you can to reconnect your gas supply after an earthquake and ensure the device will work again the next time there’s a quake.

Yes, it’s possible to cap a gas line yourself if you’re no longer using it or are simply going out of town for an extended period of time. It’s essential to follow the steps on properly capping a gas line yourself. If you’re uncomfortable with any of the steps, you may want to bring in a natural gas plumber for added reassurance.

Most gas companies and utilities brokers will send a technician to relight a pilot light, but this may demand a service call fee. Contact your local gas company to inquire about available pilot light services. If it’s a no-go, just follow the aforementioned steps and light the manual boiler’s pilot light yourself.

Take this one seriously! If your oven smells like gas when it’s off, this is a telltale sign of a gas leak that can lead to a fire or explosion. In addition, a small leak has the potential to turn into a major leak without warning if any part of your piping or tubing breaks. Potential sources of a leak include the gas valve, burner, joint, or connection lines behind the stove. If the leak appears to be significant, you should contact the gas company or fire department.
