"The crew arrived on time and did a thorough job. The reason this rating isn't higher is because the crew chief had been in my house no more than 10 minutes before diagnosing what he said was a dangerous level of creosote in our chimney and recommending installation of a $1,000+ chimney liner, which his company would of course be happy to sell us. I said no, thanks. The next year I hired another service - Emener ([*** Link removed ***] - which told me that the chimney was actually in good shape and pretty clean considering how much we use the fireplace. 5 Star clearly used its promotional offer as a way to upsell an expensive add-on that I am now convinced wasn't needed. Beware of deals that look too good to be true."

"MacDonald was able to squeeze in our appointment on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving after I told him we were hoping to use the fireplace on Thanksgiving. They arrived a few minutes late, but I knew it was because they were trying to squeeze in my appointment between a few others. 3 people arrived and finished the chimney cleaning for 2 fireplaces in about 30 minutes. We used the fireplace next day and we had no issues. We were really happy with their services and the price! Much cheaper than some others I had talked to. It was $155 for the first fireplace and $100 for the second. Great value and the fact that they sent 3 people over made the cleaning really fast and efficient. Would highly recommend MacDonald for their chimney sweeping services.

Chimney Inspection questions, answered by experts

While some homeowners may feel confident conducting their own roof inspections, hiring a professional roofing inspector is recommended for a safe and accurate assessment. Professional roof inspectors have the knowledge and experience to identify even the smallest signs of damage or potential issues and they can spot problems that may go unnoticed by an untrained eye.

To maintain a slate roof and prolong its lifespan, conduct regular inspections, ideally annually, or schedule professional inspections. Key maintenance includes cleaning gutters regularly, promptly replacing any broken or damaged tiles, and ensuring the flashing remains intact to prevent leaks. It is also recommended to remove overhanging tree branches and address minor issues as soon as they appear.

Most manufacturers’ warranties do not cover wind damage to roof shingles, but some companies include a wind warranty rider in their warranty offer. You can purchase this rider to protect yourself, your wallet, and your roof from any damage that might occur from wind. Be sure to read all the fine print and understand any limitations of the warranty.

The installation may have been done correctly. However, improperly installed gutter guards can easily damage your shingles. Also, cheap gutter guards rarely come with installation fixtures. In the worst cases, they simply ask you to nail the guards in, which would sabotage your roof’s water resistance and thus void the warranty. To be sure, always check with your home warranty provider before making any modifications.

There are a few things you should look out for that suggest your chimney needs repair. The most obvious of which is leaking around the bricks or stone, which should be addressed by a professional immediately. If you’re unsure of its repair status, consider conducting a chimney inspection. Some other repair signs include:

  • Smoky smell in your home when you’re using your chimney

  • Visible damage to the bricks or mortar between them

  • Chimney is pulling away from your home

  • Portions of the brick are flaking away or crumbling

  • Visible cracks that travel through the mortar in a stair-step formation
