"We had our chimney capped. The guys from 5-Star showed up on time, their quote was competitive (and very fair), and they were ready to do the work the same day, which they did. They did a couple of extras for us and cleaned everything up before they left. Damon sat down with us to show us pictures of what we needed done and then pictures of what it looks like now. Great Customer Service! One day - Done! And the best part: lifetime warranty on the cap! Highly recommend 5 Star Chimney Service!!"

"Very professional workers. They came in for a regular chimney clean and inspection and found a few things that needed some work. Without pressuring me, they were very patient and took the time to explain why each issue should be taken care of and even waited while I discussed with my husband and about how we would like to move forward. Wonderful work and we can't wait to enjoy our lovely fire place all winter."

Chimney Inspection questions, answered by experts

A roof's lifespan can range from 15 to 200 years, with an average of 25 to 50 years, depending heavily on the material, quality of installation, maintenance, and local climate. Asphalt shingle roofs are common and typically last 15 to 30 years; three-tab shingles have a lifespan of about 20 years, while architectural shingles can last up to 30. More durable materials have longer lifespans: metal roofs last 30 to 100 years, clay and concrete can last 50 to 100 years, and slate roofs can last up to 200 years with proper care. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning gutters and replacing damaged shingles, is crucial for extending the life of any roof.

It’s a good idea to conduct a DIY attic inspection at least once a year to look for signs of water damage, pest infestation, and damage to the underside of the roof decking. If you suspect any problems, call in a professional to confirm and come up with a solution. You should also hire a pro to inspect an attic before purchasing a home, and you can have an inspection done as a seller to entice buyers to move forward with an offer or purchase.

If you don’t see obvious signs of roof leaks, like water spots on the ceilings inside or visible damage to the roof membrane, the best way to check for leaks is to have a professional complete a heat scan of your roof. This will identify areas where water has penetrated the membrane and is keeping the roof cooler in certain areas.

You can start inspecting your roof from the ground by looking for unevenness in the roof lines and slopes. Keep an eye out for broken, damaged, or missing shingles, and look for visible gaps where the roofing material meets exterior walls or roof penetrations, like your chimney. If you’re comfortable getting up on your roof and using the necessary safety equipment, you can get a closer look at these areas to identify signs of damage. If you notice any potential issues, it’s best to call in a professional to confirm your findings.

The three main types of home inspections you should always carry out for new construction include a pre-drywall inspection, a post-drywall inspection, and a one-year inspection. The pre-drywall inspection can identify building code violations, issues with plumbing, electrical, and HVAC components, and structural issues. The post-drywall inspection can identify damaged building materials, insufficient insulation, and more. An inspection at the one-year mark after construction will identify problems your builder must fix under their comprehensive one-year warranty.
