"FM Generator installed the whole house unit for much less than I thought it would be. They have been servicing it ever since. I am very pleased with the responsiveness of FM Genderator and the quality of their service. I live right on the ocean and the original generator died just before the warranty period. This is primarily due to the corrosive nature of the salt air. They reinstalled a new one quickly. I am very happy with their services, and have recommended them to others in my neighborhood."

"Galvin came for the installation of the Nest thermostat but started by first fixing my heating gas furnace before installing the thermostat. He is a great resource! I highly recommend him."

"It was a pleasure working with Justin and Dave. They were kind, reliable, and a pleasure to have in our home. High-level integrity and tenacity. They found several clusters of live knob and tube lighting, despite a previous electrician signing off that all knob and tube was removed. I would hire them again without question."

"I had no heat in the house. After plumber told me there’s electrical problem, I called a few electricians only to be told they could come ten days or two weeks out. Temps are dropping to low 40s and 30s. Desperately I gave Biondich Electric a call and spoke to Mat. As soon as he heard no heat, he rescheduled his other appointments and came to help me in the same afternoon. He was very thorough and thoughtful, even took extra time to explain everything to a novice like me. He got the heat back on in a few hours after rerouting wires and Installing things for extra safety. He even came by once again the next morning to help me diagnose one other plumbing issue. Mat is very professional, knowledgeable and courteous. His rate is reasonable. I will definitely call him when I have electrical problems in the future and will recommend him to my friends on the cape. Thank you, Mat!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

Generators are safe to use as long as they are installed and operated correctly according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The most critical safety tips are to never use a portable or fuel-powered generator inside an enclosed space due to the risk of lethal carbon monoxide poisoning; always operate it outdoors where fumes can dissipate away from your home. Additionally, never attempt to connect a generator to your home’s electrical panel yourself—hire a professional to ensure the setup meets safety standards. Finally, avoid overloading the generator by not connecting more appliances than it is rated for, as this can damage your equipment or cause a fire.

Costs depend on generator type, labor, and additional wiring or transfer switch requirements.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.
