"Great company to work with. Wonderful staff and clear explanations every step of the way. Did everything they said they would do when they said they would do it. Very tidy and no mess despite having to excavate to put in the oil tank for the generator. Installation was done quickly and efficiently. Two years later all working very well and good annual service agreement. Would absolutely work with this company again and recommend them to anyone."

"Cape Cod Electrical has done several jobs for us and we highly recommend them. Initially, Nick installed our Generac generator and has kept it serviced over the past few years. Then we approached them about installing a mini-split system this spring. Again, they did an outstanding job and when a slight snafu arrived handled it rapidly and professionally. Nick has also done a smaller electrical job for us. We highly recommend them without reservation. Friendly and courteous and definitely interested in doing an excellent job to everyone's satisfaction."

"Jason and his team with Cotti-Johnson did an excellent job updating our electrical boxes, installing the washer/dryer hookup, and getting us setup with a generator! Sam, our assigned electrician, even took the time to go through the entire operation of the generator from A-Z. I would definitely recommend them for any electrical work!"

"Expensive but professional. The electrician that did the work was excellent and seemed.to enjoy explaining what he was doing and why it had to be done that way. I felt like I learned something while he installed ceiling lights. He also cleaned up after himself like he'd never been there."

"My solar inverter stopped working in my existing solar system, and since my original installer went out of business, I had a hard time finding someone to replace the inverter provided by SolarEdge. It was a small job, and most large companies weren’t interested, while those willing to help were booked out for at least a couple of months. I contacted Justin, and he replaced the inverter within just a few days. He was very friendly, efficient, and offered a very reasonable price. Justin was also extremely knowledgeable, explained everything clearly, and kept me updated throughout the process. He arrived on time, completed the work neatly, and made sure the system was running perfectly before leaving. Overall, his professionalism, honesty, and dedication to customer satisfaction made the whole experience stress-free and smooth."

"I highly recommend Juan Pimentel for all your electrical needs. I have hired him twice, and he has exceeded my expectations. Juan is very punctual, reliable, courteous and extremely safety conscious. He really knows his business and is a consummate professional. He answers all communications promptly (which I cannot say for many contractors I have hired) plus he goes the extra mile. He even vacuums his work area when he is done! This is the man you want doing your electrical job."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Costs range from $500 to $2,500, depending on generator type and installation complexity.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Setting up utilities on a vacant property usually takes at least a few months, or between 6 weeks to 16 weeks. This process requires working with the local planning and zoning department, hiring a building contractor or engineer to design the utility layout, securing permits, laying the lines, and connecting the utilities.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.
