Because plumbing repairs are wide-ranging in scope, job completion time may vary from a few hours or several days. Simple jobs such as clearing a clog, replacing a garbage disposal, or repairing a toilet will only take an hour or two. Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.

The good news: you don’t have to think about this very often. Plastic, lead, and cast iron sewer lines last 50 to 100 years, depending on soil conditions and tree roots. The part you can control is keeping them clear by watching what goes down the drain. Use compost pails for food scraps, cooking grease, and paper towels.

The cost to install a two-way cleanout for a sewer line ranges from around $500 to $2,000. Two-way cleanouts provide plumbers with outside access to your sewer and can make it easier to clear out clogs and blockages.

A two-way cleanout can help if there’s already a clog, but the best strategy to prevent one is by not rinsing grease, oil, or fat down your drains, not flushing or rinsing coffee grounds or egg shells down your drains, flushing only human waste and toilet paper (so no diapers, period products, bathroom wipes, or paper towels), and using drain guards on all of your drains.
