"We had John and the crew do work on our driveway, including fixing the apron and putting down new stone on our approximately 100‑ft long driveway. The process was done right from start to finish—they laid down hard pack first, rolled it out, then added the stone and rolled that as well. A new asphalt apron was installed at the top, and it came out beautiful. In addition, a drain was installed in our other driveway to catch water running down from the road, which made a big difference. John and the crew were professional, on time, and extremely hard‑working. We plan to hire them again this spring to asphalt our other driveway. Highly recommend John and the crew for quality work and great results."

"We had an older driveway with a very shallow dry well. The driveway flooded EVERY time it rained. We live on a slight hill and water would flow into the driveway from the top of the street and pool in the driveway. RS re-graded the driveway so the rainwater continues right down the street now. They also installed a large new drain so any surface water is taken care of. We had a massive rain storm last week and not one drop of water ended up in the new driveway! They did a tremendous job, I would highly recommend them."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Common alternatives to a gravel driveway include concrete, asphalt, brick, stone pavers, and permeable pavers. Concrete and asphalt are generally the most affordable options. However, concrete can be prone to cracking in cold climates, while asphalt may soften in areas with high heat and direct sun exposure. For enhanced curb appeal, brick, stone, and permeable pavers are popular choices, though their installation can be more expensive due to intricate designs. Stone pavers offer a natural look and are sometimes installed with gravel around them. Both permeable pavers and brick driveways provide excellent drainage, which helps prevent flooding and reduce water runoff.

Even with regular maintenance, most driveways don’t last much longer than 30 years. Alligator cracking is a clear warning sign that your driveway’s foundation is failing, and cracks that are deep and wide can let water in, causing more damage. Standing water is another red flag. If your driveway doesn’t drain properly, it’s going to degrade slowly. Finally, if you’re seeing dips or uneven patches, that’s a sign the base layer or soil is shifting. If these issues pop up, it’s time to replace your driveway.

Instead of a set number of types, asphalt comes in variations designed for different needs. Some are categorized by temperature—hot mix, warm mix, and cold mix. Others are sorted by composition, like dense-graded, gap-graded (such as Stone Matrix Asphalt), porous, and mastic asphalt. There are also modified versions with added compounds like polymers, rubber, or emulsions. Instead of focusing on a number, it may be more useful to understand how contractors customize asphalt for durability, climate, and traffic conditions.

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.
