Hello, my name is Joe Deveau. I have owned and operated Deveau Painting since 1978. I was a lifelong member of Belmont until 2005 when I moved to Lexington. I was trained and mentored by the late Louis DePamphillis of Belmont, a third generation master painter. He trained me in customer service, proper preparation, coating application, cleanliness and special attention to details. At the time (1970) we had to custom mix colors on site. This was a specialty for Louis. He taught me the proper techniques and procedures for matching colors. We also would take new wood and match the stain color and grain to blend with existing woodwork and trim. Due to this strict and old school training, I have continued to pass down these qualities to my employees through-out the years.

It is possible to refinish your own furniture, but it’s usually a good idea to leave the work to the professionals. Furniture refinishing often requires the use of paint stripper or solvents to remove existing finish, which can be dangerous to inhale. Additionally, it’s easy to make mistakes during the process that could permanently damage your piece, limiting its lifespan instead of extending it. Hiring a furniture refinishing professional is especially worthwhile for antique furniture, which often requires more delicate refinishing work.

Refinishing reduces landfill waste, minimizes resource extraction impacts, and uses fewer raw materials than new installations.

Clean regularly, avoid overloading shelves, and address scratches or dents promptly.

If the scratch is large enough that it compromises the integrity of the wood, a wood filler probably won’t be enough to fix the problem. In that case, you might need to sand and refinish the entire floor or replace a board. If you do use a filler, use one that’s appropriate for the scratch. Water-based wood fillers work for small gaps or gouges, while epoxy has added strength to fill larger scratches and gaps.
