Michael fit us in on a Sunday for piano tuning. We have him tune our piano every four months and clean it every other visit. I?m happy that he texts me reminders so I don?t forget (I don?t play, but my wife and kids tell me its my job to have it tuned).
After several tunings, the piano is sounding healthier than ever.
Age of Piano:
My wife and I bought the piano 22 years ago from Costco, when we first got married, bought a house and working our way through school. It was the first piece of furniture we bought together. Michael takes great care of this cherished piano!
Who Plays:
My wife of course! She studied at the Manhattan School when she was in high school and had the opportunity to play at Carnegie Hall. Professionally, she went on another career path, but still plays for pleasure. My children have played other instruments in the New Jersey Youth Symphony, studied at MANES Prep (at New School), Manhattan School (Summer), and other programs. They practice being accompanied by a piano before recitals.
Maybe I'll learn one day.

Response from East Best Piano
"I don't know who and how tuned this piano before me, but it was completely out of tune and has a very low pitch raise. 1/2 a tone or 1 step down. I suggested 2 ways: the cheapest with low pitch $130, or the best- do it twice to standard for 1.5 price: $130+$65=$195. They preferred the 2nd way. Plus action work, I fixed some problems in action. Total=$246. The next time and later it'll be only $130. For my local customers the price for regular tuning is $120. Another good tuners charge $140. And last one: I gave an estimate and explained everything before my work, so they had a choice. Michael/ East Best Piano."

Response from East Best Piano
"about the price: in my 2 websites: 1) www.michaelspianoservices.com, 2) www.eastbestpianoservices.com the price for upright piano is $120, for Baby Grand is $130. This customer has a Baby Grand, so $130 is the correct price. M.b. over the phone I forgot to ask what kind of piano and I thought it's an upright. If some questions or problems the customer can call me at any time and I can come again and fix everything. My the 1st goal- the customer should be happy always, if it's not so on this time-sorry."

Michael was very professional. He is an expert at his craft. He was diligent in scheduling and punctual with the appointment.
His service was desperately needed as the piano I have has gone years without tuning. Now that my youngest son has found a love for the instrument, it needed this service badly. Now that Michael has come and gone, my ears enjoy the beautiful sounds that son plays.

I had decided to start giving two of my young grandchildren piano lessons. My childhood spinet was located at one daughter's house, the other, a recent purchase was at the other daughter's house. Michael 's e-mails were courteous and friendly. He made sure to get all the details straight ahead of time. He also gave us a "ball park" estimate on the tuning price for the two spinets. He arrived exactly when he said he would and got straight to work, looking over the piano. This piano had not been tuned in years, and it sounded awful. He explained the possible problems in the tuning and repair of such an old piano, and specifically the difficulties of repairing a spinet. He then asked if we still wanted to go ahead. At no time did I feel pressured. He went ahead with the tuning, which he does the old fashioned way, by ear, using a tuning fork. He fixed some tight keys and tuned the piano beautifully. He asked for a 10 minute cigarette break, which he took on the front porch. Then we went to the second house to tune the second piano. That one was in better shape, and it required less work.
What I liked about Michael was that he explained everything he was doing as he was doing it, so I got a real education as he was tuning the pianos. He is a cultured, personable gentleman, and I enjoyed spending the afternoon with him. He is extremely knowledgeable about pianos, and I won't buy another without his advice.
If you need your piano tuned, call Michael. You won't regret it!

Michael did an excellent job with the tunings. He tunes by ear, and it was apparent that he does have an excellent ear. I was very pleased with the results. He had to work around the school schedule and school cancellations due to snow, but went out of his way to be sure the pianos were tuned in time for the concerts. He is very professional and courteous.

Called Michael in the morning and he was able to give me an appointment later that afternoon. Showed up promptly at the time promised. Was very knowledgeable and efficient. Will definitely call him again in a few months when we need another tuning.

We have used Michael twice, both times he was extremely professional and very knowledgable. The piano we bought was used and a starter piano. Michael gave some great tips for when we upgrade.

Michael is very professional. The piano, circa 1928, was a bit out of tune, but I noticed a certain shrillness in some strings. He went right to work and tuned it to itself, rather than to 440, no doubt because of its age,. which was fine with me. When I played it, it sounded perfect.
I would definitely call him again when necessary.

The gentleman came early!! Our piano was in pretty bad condition according to the gentleman, (This was later confirmed by the owner of the Company.), but he did his best with what we had.He does not do any work until he has your approval and he tells you up front how much it is going to cost. He worked for HOURS!! Out of courtesy, I got him some tea and a sandwich because it was getting so late. He did ask for my assistance because he had just had hip replacement surgery and was not as agile as usual, but gave me a discount. I know $200 sounds like much, but I think it was worth it considering the effort. The only thing he did not honor the 10% discount to new customers as advertised on his web site which is false advertising!! Boo!!
Response from East Best Piano
"I cancel 10% discount for new customers. I have a lot of customers without it. So, I don't need it.!"

Mr. Gopenko was great to work with. As my piano hadn't been tuned for a while, it had gone a little south of A440. He suggested a couple options: (1) retune it all the way back up to A440, but face the possibility of having it go out of tune again fairly quickly because of the extra pressure on the strings & pegs; or (2) tune the piano at its current pitch, i.e. a tad lower than A440, and then over time, gradually bring it back up. This way, it would be more likely to stay in tune until the next time it gets a tuning. I went with the 2nd option because it's not like I'll be playing with an orchestra any time soon. So....this is why pianos really do need to be tuned every 6 months! Next time I will get it tuned again promptly at 6 months! Mr. Gopenko also gave me a quick tour of the inside of the piano and the mechanics, because I was interested and was asking questions.

I called Michael to make an appt and he was able to come on a Sunday morning. He arrived and immediately went to work. He was very friendly and answered my questions. He tuned the piano and when we asked him to look at a pedal that was squeaking, he was very easily able to see what the problem was and fixed it. He was professional and charged a reasonable price. He also worked efficiently so he did not take up much more than an hour of our time. We will definitely bring him back next time we need to have the piano tuned.

Really bad experience.
Michael came in and told me my piano sucked and that it had not been
tuned for 8 years. It is a fairly new piano (2 years old) that had been
tuned and moved. He wanted to charge me double the amount to tune the
piano as he had specified on the phone. I told him that i wasn't
interested and would get someone else and out of the blue he could
suddenly tune the piano for the original price. I do not appreciate this
lack of professionalism and the attitude.
I would NEVER
recommend this person again. I don't know who the people are who
recommend him but I definitely would not give him an A.

"I was wonder and upset. After 20 the best reviews I got this very bad. I don't know, why?I came on time, but got "D".2)when I finished and Member tryed, she said "very good" and I charge just regular price.Yes, when I came and exam the piano I said piano has a low pitch and needs a 2 tunings for double price if you need a standard pitch, but if you don't care about it can be 1 tun-g for regular price with low pitch.I said the piano LUCKS LIKE 8 yrs wasn't tuned. So, again:came on time, tuned the piano perfectly and charge just regular price. What else? I see only 1 reason, some people enjoy to make something good for others, but some people ....(you know). I'm glad the 1st part of people is much bigger and much better."

e tuning--I have a beautiful Mason and Hamlin piano that hadn't been tuned in a long, long time. Michael said it really needed two tunings done a week apart but he was able to bring it into shape during the single tuning although we scheduled a 2nd tuning 3 months from the date of the first tuning.
Michael really knows what he is doing and I was very pleased with the result.

Excellent. Came on short notice, and very qualified. Importantly for us, he took an interest in the overall condition and function of the instrument - not just in its pitch. By the way, when he was done the pitch was great! Playing it again!
