Customers say: Quick response

"Joel did a great job turning some raw undeveloped land into a beautiful up hill driveway. The job involved rebuilding a stone wall, tree stump excavation, sculpting over 250 yards of soils into gentle slopes and finishing the job by spreading gravel for the new driveway. Joel is a master at working an excavator and has excellent work ethics. I am looking forward to having him back to do the next round of work on my property."

"Marc went above and beyond when installing a yard drainage system in our side yard. He was quick to give us a competitive quote, easy to work with, and got a complicated job done fast. I would highly recommend him for homeowners looking to modify the slope and or drainage plan for their plot."

"As a rookie in this area of landscaping, I needed an honest, understandable person to explain and explore my options for redesigning my yard which has a hill, old trees and other features that made it a real challenge. Robbie patiently provided this guidance without any pressure and was happy to explain ways in which I might reduce costs. This felt more like a partnership and I am grateful to have a professional I can trust to do a quality job. Thank you!"

"Rafael and his crew did an outstanding job getting our yard ready for the winter. The yard is spotless, they trimmed plants, even cut grass that we hadn’t asked them to do. Fast, very efficient, and good people to work with."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Directional drilling is complex and requires training to use the advanced machinery. It can be challenging to monitor the position of the drill since there’s no direct line of sight. Directional drilling can also be more expensive with a cost of $10 to $30 per linear foot compared to $5 to $12 per linear foot for trenching.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

Most states do not require excavation companies to hold specific licenses, but many require at least a contractor’s license. Additionally, heavy equipment operators require a special commercial equipment license to operate machinery required for excavation. You can use Angi’s contractor licensing tool to confirm that an excavation company you’re considering hiring is fully licensed. You should also make sure that the excavation team is fully insured before allowing them to work on your property.

The average cost of excavation is approximately $3,200, with typical projects ranging from $500 to $15,000. Depending on the contractor, you may be charged between $50 and $200 per cubic yard or an hourly rate of $40 to $180 for an excavation specialist. The total cost is influenced by several factors, including the project size, the amount of soil to be removed, and the soil's condition. Hard soil, tree roots, or excessive rocks and clay can increase the price, potentially adding $200 to $1,200 to the final bill. Other factors that can drive up costs include the presence of nearby structures that complicate the work or tight spaces that require manual excavation instead of heavy machinery.

Yes, an excavation company is the best option for land grading and yard leveling. General landscapers might be able to tackle these projects, but an excavation company will do a better job because they’re used to operating the necessary heavy machinery. Landscapers might opt to do the work manually, which takes much longer and could cost you more in labor fees. Finally, excavation companies will understand local regulations and know when you need permits to legalize the work, while a landscaper might not.
