Use Dan Connolly, you will not be disappointed.
I had a stone retaining wall collapse in the spring, perhaps as a result of last winter?s record breaking conditions. The overall project went well. Dan was punctual when he came to provide me with an estimate and gave me his evaluation within twenty four hours. Dan always returned my phone calls and answered all our questions in detail. He and his crew started promptly and completed the job in less than three days. They were meticulous and professional throughout the job; he is truly a master of his craft. I would definitely consider using his company in the future if I should ever have more masonry work.
The results of using Bellrock Construction have given our house exceptional curb appeal, and working with
them at every step was a pleasure.
In addition to repairing the brick on the step, Bellrock re-grouted the entire porch. The additional cost for this extra work was MORE than reasonable. Next, came connecting two sump pump drainage lines exiting the house, sinking this drainage line and connecting it to the storm drain. Dan worked with the town to pull all of the work permits to get this job done. After the lines were merged and sunk, and connected to the storm drain, he re-seeded the yard upon completion.
The rain garden was the major component of this project. After much research on a practical and environmentally sound method to deal with our unplanned pond in the back yard (after every rain), I designed the rain garden which is a practical and environmentally sound method to alleviate (or significantly reduce) standing rain water due to poor soil conditions and/or drainage. Dan listened carefully to what I wanted and worked with me to follow my "hand drawn" plans. (This was a "first" rain garden for Bellrock.). The rain garden included: removing the top soil in the proposed garden area, digging a 6'x8' drainage pit, and digging a 35' ditch for a drainage line which emptied into a 5' square (6' deep) dry well system. The top soil in the garden was replaced by a special mixture of humus, soil and sand and bordered by a 3' gravel walkway (which also serves as a retaining wall for the water). Bellrock provided all of the materials to complete this job -- except for the water-friendly plants which I provided.
After years of dealing with a back yard pond of standing water even after insignificant rains, I was thrilled when after the first heavy "test" rain, we had NO standing water. After the most recent very heavy and lengthy downpour, we did have a small pond which disappeared within 24 hours after the rain stopped.
We couldn't be happier with Bellrock's service and the outcome.
Three outfits came by to give us an estimate, and Dan was both the cheapest quote and the most personable. I liked that he explained the process, described what parts of the yard would get dug up and pointed out that hand digging would disturb less but cost more in labor than machine digging would.
He was easily reachable by email, which I vastly prefer to phone contact, and responded quickly to questions. A rainy spring delayed the start a bit, but he stuck to his revised start date and finished the job just a few days after starting it. He and one worker completed the project while disturbing my yard and my neighbors as little as possible. I was super happy with how the walkway and patio turned out and with how many of my plants and flowers in the tight space along the walk survived the process. A week later, the walk looked like it had always been there.
Really pleased with the work he did and I love being able to wheel myself into my backyard!
They work only with belgard pavers, so your options are a bit limited on the paver selection.
I asked Dan to provide a quote for the paver work in the front as well for another area in my backyard. Quotes for both were on the higher side. I decided to go with him for the front walkway due to his personality and after reading the great reviews about him in AngiesList.
However, here is why, I have rated him at B.
1. It took way more time to finish the job (price didn't change though) than original estimate. It was a hazzle for us as well as for visitors to enter the house throughout the time of the work.
2. There was a misunderstanding in the width of the front walkway from Dan's side. He was nice enough not to make a big deal out of it and didn't charge me extra for that. However, that misunderstanding affected the finishing and the overall design of the front walkway and Dan had no suggestions to solve the problem. After a lot of discussions, we finally agreed upon a plan and Dan did it quite nicely.
3. There was a miscalculation on Dan's side regarding the number of granite blocks needed for the project. Although I am an engineer and I too didn't figure it out until Dan pointed this out to me, I would have expected Dan to figure this out in the beginning itself considering his experience in this field. This led to an increase in the overall price for the project.
Dan always mentioned that he will stand behind his work even if an issue occurred later and I trust him regarding that statement. But considering the hazzles I had to go through during the work, I have rated his work as a B although it is a B+.
Dan met with me prior to start of the project to review the details. He was very good to communicate to me via phone and email on any updates, etc. He responded to all my phone messages and emails in a timely fashion. They cleaned up the work area at the end of each day.
