"We were having trouble with the melting snow and then rain water building up next to our foundation and knew we needed it fixed. We saw Echo Excavations signs locally so we decided it was time to call. Incredibly reasonable completion time and he has a mini excavator so he was able to do really precise work and you can tell he cares so much about what he does. He is already working on a second project for us to take down some trees and clear some land to open up our backyard for our two kids and are thrilled. My daughter loves when the owner Echo, comes with him she is the sweetest husky you will ever meet."

Small jobs welcome

"My wife and I hired Marc Curtis to take large tree stumps out and grade our backyard. Marc did an outstanding job and my wife and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. Marc was very thorough from start to finish. We spoke about what was going to happen throughout every step of the project. I couldn’t recommend him enough. If you’re thinking of hiring someone, you will not be disappointed by the excellent work Marc Curtis will provide. Thank you to Marc and the rest of his crew!"

"We had a wonderful experience working with DiVerdi Site Solutions. Our property had a very wooded and uneven side and back yard that felt unusable, and we weren’t sure where to begin. Rob was incredibly helpful from the start—he took the time to walk the property with us, explain what was possible, and help us identify the best way to accomplish our goals. He communicated clearly throughout the entire process and made sure every step was followed through exactly as planned. The transformation has been amazing. Rob cleared and excavated the heavily wooded side yard and turned it into a safe, open, and usable space where our kids can play. He also leveled off the back yard, which is now functional and enjoyable instead of sloped and difficult to use. Rob was professional, efficient, and respectful of our property. The quality of his work exceeded our expectations, and the end result has made a huge difference in how we use and enjoy our yard. I would highly recommend!"

The team was always responsive, organized and kept the site in immaculate condition while they were working. Got the job with no change orders too! Would definitely hire again."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Because decomposed granite is a durable material, a crushed rock or gravel base is optional as long as the DG is properly installed and compacted. However, installing a base is a good idea because it will ensure proper drainage and stability and act as a weed suppressant (although you may still occasionally have to pull weeds). Installing an adequate base can also increase the durability of driveways and walkways. If you forego the paver base or gravel underneath, line the area with landscaping fabric to avoid weeds.

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

In most areas, you will need a permit for excavation work, even for projects that only involve grading or yard leveling. Permit requirements depend on your local government and the scope of the project, but they are especially common for significant digging or work that could affect utilities or public property. These permits help protect the local topography and prevent drainage issues. An experienced excavation company will typically know whether permits are needed and can often handle the process of pulling and closing them for you. You can also verify permit requirements by contacting your local building department and describing your project.

To determine whether your homeowners' insurance will cover crawl space repair, consider the cause of the issue. Repair may be covered if the problems were caused by an event that the insurance covers, such as vandalism or a windstorm. However, companies won't cover the repair if the issues are caused by neglect or wear and tear.
