You should flush a water heater at least once a year. Just how often you flush your water heater will depend on the water hardness level in your area. Shower mixing valves are usually located behind the shower handles. Accessing the mixing valve is difficult for a DIYer, so it’s best to call a pro if you think this could be the issue. A plumbing repair expert has the right tools and knowledge to easily access the valve, diagnose the issue, and recommend repairs if needed.

To bleed air from the pipes, start by turning off the main water supply. Then, starting with the faucet that’s closest to the water valve, open each of your faucets halfway, making sure to open both hot and cold options if they’re separate. This allows the air to escape the pipes. Once all faucets are open, turn your water supply back on and let the water run for 10 to 15 minutes until the faucets stop sputtering.

It is generally safe to stay in a house with sewer gas for a short time, even though short-term exposure is unpleasant. However, prolonged inhalation can cause headaches, nausea, or respiratory irritation. High levels of methane—which is in sewer gas—can pose an explosion risk in enclosed spaces. Ventilate the area and call a pro if you smell sewer gas or experience related health symptoms.
