"Totally recommend this company, they trimmed a large tree and also removed debris from another tree that went down in a windstorm a week earlier. You can use a chainsaw, but it won’t remove the entire stump or root ball and is not a recommended method. It takes quite a bit of physical work to achieve and will likely dull or ruin your chainsaw. Instead, consider using salt, herbicide, light deprivation, boiling water, stump grinding, or burning to kill a tree stump. These methods allow you to kill a stump using minimal machinery and physical exertion.

A general rule is that trees need 10 gallons of water for each inch of the tree’s diameter. For large trees, that can amount to approximately 160 gallons of water or more. Watering big trees to this extent can take quite a bit of time using a hose. For this reason, you may consider installing a soaker hose or sprinkler system to make the job easier.  

Palm trees are unique in that their roots don't grow straight down; they grow horizontally. Typically, palm tree roots go down between 12 and 36 inches deep. The roots grow far and wide from the base of the palm tree to absorb as much water and soil nutrients as possible. In addition, the horizontal roots are also very strong—keeping palm trees stable and helping them sway during storms.

After a big storm, you may not be sure if a tree was struck or not. Look for the telltale long scars, like strips or gouges in the bark of the tree, running in sometimes jagged lines down the length of the trunk. These scars will often show vulnerable living wood inside the tree. It’s also common to see scorched or wilted leaves on the side or top of the tree where lightning struck.

Ideally, you’ll have a good enough relationship with your neighbors that you can kindly mention this task in regular conversation. However, every neighbor (and neighborhood) is different. Your best bet will always be to ask directly and nicely, offering to contribute to the tree trimming efforts if you’d like. However, if you are bothered by the tree and your neighbor is unwilling to cut it, you can involve the help of the homeowners’ association or local authorities, if applicable.
