Small jobs welcome

"If you want a job well done, hire Ryan! He recently built a bookshelf unit for me. His workmanship is exemplary. He pays attention to every detail and creates just what you want. If youâ re looking for an excellent finishing carpenter, Ryan is your guy. On top of all that, he is polite and personable and ever so pleasant to work with. In addition to all of this, he is impeccably neat in his cleanup at the end of the project."

"I can highly recommend Georges Construction for ALL your home improvements needs. I have owned 6 houses and have hired many contractors and none of them can hold a candle to this company and their work ethic. George's crew is highly skilled, hardworking, on time, friendly and a pleasure to work with every day. They showed up at the crack of dawn and worked until dusk and several times beyond. George has very high standards when it comes to the quality of his work, and he made sure that we were satisfied with every aspect of the garage build. We are not the typical customers and wanted to add "character" in our new build. We insisted on using 4 antique 110-year-old porch posts, adding a cupola and weathervane vane to the metal garage roof and used other salvaged materials. George's crew made it all work like magic, without complaint or added labor cost. The total price of the garage was very reasonable also. I would not hesitate to hire Georges Construction again and again. This company is highly trustworthy, true artists, professional and the best in my book. I feel very lucky to have hired them. What a breath of fresh air!!!!!"

"I cannot say enough good things about Bob. He went above and beyond in every aspect of the job and was a true stand-up guy from start to finish. He worked in a very timely and professional manner, communicated everything clearly, and genuinely cared about making sure the project turned out right. The closet system I ordered from Amazon actually came with a piece that was manufactured incorrectly. Instead of giving up or leaving the job unfinished, he let us know immediately and then did everything he could to make it work. Thanks to his effort, problem-solving, and attention to detail, the end result turned out amazing. I honestly couldn?t be happier with how everything came together. I would recommend him to anyone looking for someone reliable, hardworking, and committed to doing quality work."

"There was a mix up with paint (not their fault), but we were able able to work out the situation. They were efficient and accommodating. The clean up afterward was awesome. I would hire again and highly recommend if you want a great job done by professionals at a great price."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

Removing a load-bearing wall is best handled by professionals. However, if you have the skill set and decide to DIY the project, you will still need at least one additional person to assist you. Aside from helping with demolition, you'll need another hand to install the new support beam.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.
