Granted, I’m not a real judge in the world’s biggest sports spectacle. To be honest, I have only a dim grasp of athletics. But I am very discriminating when it comes to hiring people to work on my home, and I know good work when I see it. Several months ago, after 10 years of dreaming about adding rooftop solar, I finally decided to go for it. A work colleague recommended Jeremy Coxon at SunWind, so I contacted Coxon to see if he would design and install a solar PV system for my 1,300-square foot, all-electric home. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Coxon and his associate, Trent Winlock, are exceptionally good at what they do. Coxon, an engineer, is a seasoned project manager who knows solar PV systems and out. Winlock is a talented, versatile craftsman and problem-solver. Both are hard workers who take professional standards to heart and who share a commitment to sustainable living. Unlike some companies that slap solar panels on the roof, collect their money and drive away, SunWind approached my project thoughtfully and strategically. They reviewed my annual power usage. They searched every nook and cranny of my house for air leaks, showing me where work was needed and prompting me to seal a crawlspace that had sucked out air for years. They used scientific data to determine where my panels would get maximum sun exposure. They even considered where to mount my inverter so it wouldn’t be an architectural eyesore. Then, and only then, they created a written plan for my approval, climbed atop my house themselves and made things happen. My 5,000 kW system began generating power in early May, and Duke Energy signed off on my net metering agreement soon after. Everything is working flawlessly. My most recent Duke bill (for usage May 17-June 16) was $3.45 compared to $92.95 for the same period last year. Hard to believe, but true. What’s more, SunWind made it possible for me to do something on an individual level to chip away at the problem of climate change. Every kilowatt hour I generate from the sun equals one less kilowatt hour generated by fossil fuels. That’s no small thing, and it gives me a wonderful feeling. If you’re thinking about adding solar, now or later, you’ll be hard-pressed to find anyone better than SunWind. Coxon and Winlock may not be actual Olympic athletes, but believe me when I say they will go the distance on your project, and you and the environment will be the winners

- Econ Solar IncWhen the salesman arrived, we determined that our house could actually utilize solar panels. So, we sat down to discuss the costs involved and potential return on investment. Or, so we thought. The salesman ended up giving us a long, drawn out presentation showing the history of the company and solar panel technology. He said that in some cases, electric bills can be taken down to zero or even go negative (meaning you are actually creating power). However, he was also clear that this is only the case with a certain number of panels and in certain situations. He also had us complete a questionnaire as to why we are interested in solar technology, which I can only now assume was his way of determining how best to bully us into buying them. At the end of this presentation, we finally were given an estimate of cost for the panels. (Around $30,000 for six panels). It has been long enough since we met with him that I cannot remember exactly, but I believe the time for return on investment given to us for 6 panels was between 15 and 20 years. (The electrical savings was minimal). We told him that was too much money to spend on our home for such a long time to return. He changed the amount of panels and added supposed "credits" to make it cheaper, but it was never something that was feasible for us. At this point, this man had been in our home for 3 hours. After being mentally drained from this long exchange, we felt pressured to buy something they were selling. So, we ended up purchasing the e-shield attic wrap, programmable thermostat, "custom" water heater blanket, and energy auditing system. I say "custom" because he described this water heater blanket as custom fit on site to our water heater and not "just a wrap like those other guys." Ends up, it's just a wrap taped down the front. The programmable thermostat and water heater blanket could have been bought just as easily at a home improvement store. The energy audit system is interesting to see how much energy you are using on a minute by minute basis, but the software is really useless unless you have solar panels. The e-shield was not very aesthetically installed, and I'm not exactly sure how we will determine if it is helping with heat control. We take sole responsibility for not being able to say no to this salesman. We were worn out during this process, and we are newer home owners, so we consider it a lesson learned. However, for anyone who is considering inviting this company into their home, they should be prepared to sacrifice their time as well as money. Start to finish, this person was in my home for 4 hours. I could have been educated about solar panels and given an estimate in less than 1 hour. I can only assume that their sales tactic is to wear you down until you finally buy something to get them to leave. It worked for this sucker; I wish everyone else better luck. *Also, for anyone who has had trouble with Gutter Magic, they are the same company. This was the first warning sign that I ignored as I had trouble with Gutter Magic in the past

"Everyone we worked with was very professional. The salesman was very responsive when I had questions or concerns during the job. The crew knew what they were doing and did an excellent job. There was an area of rot under two windows that turned out to be a much bigger job to fix than was apparent from the surface. They did a great job replacing the underlying structure and shingles and installed flashing to prevent future problems. They also did a marvelous job of cleaning up all the debris. Windows were covered and the three colors were put on exactly as we wanted.

"We researched many roofing products & several local roofing companies before deciding upon Cornett. Their HD powdered-coated metal shakes were our first choice for looks & also offered best quality of materials & warranty, even their "standard" 5V was a better quality than what others were selling. It took about 2 wks to schedule the quote apparently due to the amount of roof damage from recent local storms. Our project was started in a timely manner about 2 wks after signing the contract & took 3 days to complete all 3 buildings. The office & crew were very polite. The crew kept the jobsite tidy & worked long days. There were some hiccups along the way & we feel that inter-departmental communication could be improved upon. Most of the crew was ESL so perhaps there was a language barrier involved, too. In addition, there was an incident of what seemed like poor planning based on the weather forecast while finishing other parts of the roof rather than the part on the house that was still open requiring tarps overnight. All that being said, once our concerns were relayed to the proper person, the issues were addressed & resolved in a very timely manner. A couple of issues also popped up soon after the job was completed & we were pleasantly surprised that those were also promptly resolved. The only issue that we are still not quite sure of is if the crew was actually Cornett employees or subbed. We specifically asked if they were subs during the quote & we also asked the spokesman for the crew & were told they "work for Cornett". What is strange is that there was a miscommunication or misunderstanding about removing gutters for the roof installation & the crew asked if they were going to replace the gutters, too. However, at the time of the quote, we were told that there wasn't room to negotiate the gutter quote because that was subbed out. Based on that info, a reasonable conclusion is that if the same crew that installed the roof was also going to install gutters then they would appear to be subs. We suspect that the "crew leader" is an employee of Cornett so technically that is why we were told they do not use subs. As it turned out, even if they were subs, they did a good job, which was our concern about using subs in the first place, but we would have liked more transparency in the details. We absolutely love the look of our new roofs, esp the shakes, & have had several compliments on our "new house". Most importantly, we have had several rainstorms over the last month & there has been no sign of leaks & we can expect no shingle damage for the next 50 yrs. We highly recommend Cornett.
