"Excellent customer service! Prompt response to my request & very very fast completion of project. I only wish the replacement piece was a closer color match to the original piece, but I think the color chosen is very complementary."

"Queen City Glass block replaced our two pane glass basement windows with vented glass block windows. Every interaction during installation was warm and professional. The basement is now more secure, and will have cross ventilation.

"Ordering and purchasing windows from Zen is perhaps the easiest and most satisfying purchase experience I have ever had, especially when it comes to home maintenance. I received a quotation within minutes of requesting one. Payment is made when the job is completed. Someone came out to measure and the windows were installed in one day. I purchased half of my windows in 2016 and the other half in 2017. Perhaps the best aspect of Zen window purchasing is that it is all online, but a quick phone call away if needed. Prices were considerably more reasonable than the other two companies I considered using. Furthermore, Dan Wolt, the owner took immediate action on any questions/concerns and exhibited such integrity in business practice! Case in point, when I was quoted a lower price (through no fault of his) he insisted that he give me the price quoted because of his business ethics. Truly, I would recommend Zen Windows to any person looking for high quality windows, NO sales rep. visitations and personal service. I have been very happy with my triple pane windows and resulting reduction in utility bills."

"Called JFK Window and Door to replace our outstide storm door based on other reviews and was not disappointed. They called back within a day, provided lots of options based on our needs, came out quickly to give a firm estimate and completed the work on time. Very professional and the end result is excellent. Will definitely use them again."

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair

Glass block windows typically last for 15 to 30 years, which is slightly less than the 20- to 50-year lifespan of standard windows. You can extend their life by resealing them every few years. Professional installation is also key to ensuring the windows are placed correctly and will function properly for years to come. A professional installer will have the necessary skills, tools, and knowledge to install these features and can identify potential issues like damaged frames or cramped areas during a consultation.

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.

Heavy glass tends to be more expensive than thin glass because it is stronger and more durable. In most cases, ¼-inch-thick glass is ideal for mirrors, and ⅛-inch-thick glass is ideal for residential windows. Heavier glass isn’t always necessary, and can be more challenging to hang or install. Work with a local window installation pro for replacement or new construction windows.

Their thickness depends on application, but most glass walls are typically 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch thick. Although it’s not as common, single panes of glass can also be 1 inch thick.
