"We had a security issue with our door late at night. Daniel was quick to respond that night and the next day. He was able to fix the door while on sight and then addressed additional issues with the storm door and gutter drains within a few days and at a reasonable price. He is professional, efficient and easy to work with. Highly recommend him for any job you need done around the home."

"Dave did a fantastic job installing two new toilets in my condo. He was very personable, professional, and easy to work with from start to finish. The installation was done efficiently, everything looks great, and he made sure everything was working perfectly before leaving. "I had done some research on replacement windows and was impressed on all three phases of this project. The offer extended to me by the Compozit sales rep was really competitive and attractive especially because the window product and the installation came as one service, everything included. We contracted for the windows during the height of the pandemic and John was respectful when demonstrating the Primax product, setting up in my front yard at a social distance. I don't know a lot about home improvement, but he helped me envision my dream windows and encouraged me to purchase them by offering a contract that I could afford. We chose dark bordered, high quality glass that I can wash easily, and I made the right decision to replace all the windows in my one-story house. I did not communicate often with the company after I ordered the windows, but that was understandable because of .... 2020. Nevertheless, the windows arrived and were installed within the time frame they estimated. The professional window installer they sent, Cody Hensel, was awesome. He obviously has a lot of experience and a high level of skill installing these windows. He worked quickly and without complaint in the hot sun and professionally coordinated with the metal roofing team that was here too. It could have been competitive chaos, but he was cooperative and stayed focused on the window work. At first I was concerned that there was only one of him, but then observed him doing the work of a 5-person crew, tearing down our nasty windows, carefully measuring, prepping, installing the gorgeous new Primax, and cleaning up nicely afterward. He even explained the final payment process to me, and incidentally, the financing they set up was processed flawslessly. The third important phase of this, the biggest purchase of my life, was in follow-up with the Compozit company. I love, love, love my new windows, but there was one small issue that I had to resolve before 100%, 5-Star satisfaction. During ordinary, non-pandemic times, I may have been able to resolve it sooner, but especially now there are few other construction companies who would spare their top people to call me and talk through my relatively minor concern and resolve it mutually to make sure I am happy in the short- and long-term with my overall service. Thank you so much. I can already tell the difference in the temperature inside the house, I love my new clear views of the outdoors, and am looking forward to the energy savings."

Window Door Contractors questions, answered by experts

Professionals clean window screens the same way a homeowner can—by removing the screens and cleaning them with a sponge. A window cleaning pro may come with better equipment, like a high powered wet/dry vacuum or pressure washer to speed up the process and achieve a deeper clean.

Solar screens use a thick mesh of polyester to block out the UV waves and solar heat. While they are more expensive at about $7.50 per square foot, they can protect your porch or hardwood floors from sun damage and keep the room or porch on the other side of the patio cool.

Most standard windows can accommodate solar screens, but specialty shapes or non-standard frames may require custom solutions. It’s important to consult with a professional to ensure compatibility and proper fit for unique window designs. Arched, bay, and fabricated windows often need fabricated screens, which can increase costs and lead time.

Adding a window to a brick house costs $3,100 to $10,575. Because you’ll need to make changes to the structure of the home, the cost will include obtaining permits and hiring the best pros for this complex job. Larger windows will cost more to install, and the cost can vary based on the window frame material you choose.

It is generally recommended to remove window screens for the winter, especially in climates with heavy snow, freezing rain, or frigid temperatures. Removing them helps prevent damage to the screen mesh and frames that can be caused by ice and moisture buildup between the screen and the window. Taking out the screens also allows more natural light and warmth into your home during shorter winter days and makes it easier to clean your windows thoroughly. In warmer climates where harsh weather is not a concern, the decision is more about personal preference; some homeowners prefer the clearer view, while others leave them in for convenience.
